AURORA -- One swimmer and one diver from Aurora High have advanced to this weekend's state swimming-diving meet at C.T. Brainin Natatorium at Canton McKinley High School.
At the district meet at Cleveland State University, the girls team placed 12th in Division I and the boys placed 18th in Division II. Hudson won the girls title and Hawken won the boys title in Aurora's divisions.
Lara Ketonen continued her stellar postseason achievements and will advance to the state meet in two events. She outlasted the district field in the 100 freestyle (51.46) and finished third in the 50 freestyle (23.97).
Diver Drew Albrecht (third placed with 412.35 points) also advanced to the state meet.
AHS diver Kylie Palian placed 11th with 279.25 points at the district meet.
Also, the girls 200 free relay team of Ketonen, Marissa Henderson, Lauren Sapochetti and Abbey Stechler placed 10th in 1:42.62, a school record, while the 200 medley relay team of Ketonen, Whitney Lieberth, Henderson and Stechler placed 14th in a school record-setting time of 1:55.15. Neither qualified for a state meet trip.
Other placings at the district meet for the girls were: Lieberth, 18th in 100 breaststroke (1:09.51); Sapochetti, 19th in 100 breaststroke (1:09.62) and 28th in 100 butterfly (1:03.78); and Stechler, 37th in 100 free (58.19).
For the boys, Tyler Liston placed 12th in 200 free (1:49.96), Tyler Hayes was 28th in 100 breaststroke (1:10.99), Gunnar Meyer was 30th in 200 individual medley (2:26.16) and the 400 free relay of Liston, John Bender, Meyer and Nicholas Belofsky was 15th (3:40.38).
"The swims over the weekend were unbelievable," said coach Amanda Marlow. "I couldn't be more happy with how both the girls and boys teams ended this season.
"The girls were able to drop their 200 medley and 200 free relay records to a lower tim. The boys were able to drop their 400 free relay by 3 seconds. After being fully tapered the week before, that is very impressive.
"There were multiple best times throughout the weekend."
