AKRON -- Junior Lara Ketonen was a shining star for the Aurora High girls swim team at the Division I sectional meet Feb. 11 at the University of Akron.
Not only did she best huge fields of swimmers to finish first in the 50 freestyle (24.25) and 100 freestyle (53.13), she set a sectional record in the shorter event and will move on to this weekend's district meet at Cleveland State University in both events.
The girls team placed sixth out of 14 teams, while the Greenmen boys placed 14th out of 24 teams in the Division II meet.
"The swimmers had a great weekend," said coach Amanda Marlow. "The girls moved up three places as a team over last year's placing. They worked so hard all season and it clearly showed. We [the coaching staff] are speechless from the lights-out swims we saw."
Ketonen's 50 and 100 freestyle clockings were both school records, but those weren't the only school records that fell.
The girls 200 medley relay team of Ketonen, Whitney Lieberth, Marissa Henderson and Abbey Stechler swam a school record 1:55.46; the 200 free relay of Ketonen, Henderson, Lauren Sapochetti and Stechler swam a record 1:44.13; and the 400 free relay of Paulina Galchenko, Maddie Schmitt, Lieberth and Sapochetti came in at a record 3:55.03.
All of those teams placed eighth, and the 200 medley and 200 free relays will move on to the district meet.
In addition, Sapochetti (1:09.13, eighth place) and Lieberth (1:09.66, 12th place) set school records in the 100 breaststroke and will move on to district competition.
Other placers in the sectional meet for the girls were Kylie Palian, seventh (279.25), and Katie Stover, 12th (253.5) in diving; Stechler in 50 free, 12th in 25.92 and 15th in 100 free in 57.73; and Sapochetti, 10th in 100 butterfly in 1:03.4.
Palian, Stechler and Sapochetti advanced to the district.
On the boys side, three individuals and one relay team advanced to the district meet.
Individuals advancing are Tyler Liston, third in 200 free (1:51.72); Gunnar Meyer, 16th in 200 IM (2:24.68) and Tyler Hayes, 16th in 100 breaststroke; and the 400 free relay of Liston, Meyer, John Bender and Nicholas Belofsky, ninth (3:43.64).
Other Aurora placers for the boys were the 200 free relay of Liston, Bender, Tyler Hayes and Belofsky, 12th in 1:42.65; and the 200 medley relay of Alex Bailey, Hayes, Meyer and Vincent Harper, 16th in 2:04.2.
Division II boys divers did not compete at the sectional level, but will be in action at the district meet.
Other girls who competed in the sectional meet, but did not place, are Hannah Wilk, Kristina Vidziunas, Elizabeth Barto, Gabriella Elsas, Jane Puzder, Claire Schiopota, Remy Stock and Julia Brezovec.
