AURORA -- The Greemen girls squad has become adept at finishing basketball games.
With a modest lead, the Greenmen used a 14-8 fourth quarter to seal a tough league clash and keep a half-game lead over Tallmadge in the Suburban League American Conference with a 45-36 victory over Copley on Feb. 1 on the road.
The Greenmen are 15-4 overall and 9-2 in the conference. Tallmadge (15-3) is 8-2 and Revere (12-7) is lurking just behind at 7-2 as of this writing.
Senior forward Syarra Sellers led the Greenmen with 22 points and had an outstanding game. Her sophomore sister, Shayla Sellers, added 19 against Copley (7-13, 3-8).
Aurora held Copley to just 13 field goals. Emily Dente had 12 for the Indians, while guard Paige Brenner mustered 7 points.
Seniors April Davis (2 points) and Sarah Marchese also played strong defense, while sophomore Haley Ross added 2 points.
Drawings for the Division I sectional-district tournament were held Feb. 5 for the Euclid brackets.
Other schools at Euclid will be Bedford (14-6), Hudson (5-13), Cleveland John Adams (6-14), Cleveland John F. Kennedy (7-8), Cleveland John Hay (16-3), Maple Heights (15-5), Nordonia (10-9), Shaker Heights (9-10), Solon and Twinsburg.
Solon (16-2) is ranked fifth in Ohio, while Twinsburg (14-5) is having a strong season with a battle-tested starting five. Maple Heights, Bedford, Nordonia and John Hay have talent.
The Greenmen are scheduled to play non-league Parma Senior tonight (Feb. 8) at home. Other upcoming games are Feb. 11 at Willoughby South, Feb. 13 at Chardon and the final American Conference contest of the year Feb. 15 at home against Tallmadge.
BOYS LOSE IN 2 OTS
The Aurora boys basketball team lost a heartbreaking conference game 80-76 in two overtimes to Medina Highland on Feb. 3.
It was a tough league loss on the road that Aurora (6-9) dropped to the Hornets (10-6, 5-3), who could be a dangerous tournament team.
Aurora fell to 2-6 in the strong Suburban League American Conference.
Rangy guard Collin Rittman (a game-high 34 points) and wing Ryan Frederick (four 3-pointers and 14 points) burned Aurora with their shooting.
The Greenmen stormed back to tie the game at 65 in regulation and force the first OT session, which ended in a 72-all draw, but Aurora netted only 4 more points the remainder of the way.
It was a loss that spoiled brilliant performances by junior forward James Robinson and junior guard Cade Huffman.
Robinson exploded for 25 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Huffman poured in 26 points and drilled a trio of 3-pointers.
Junior guard Zack Elsawy popped in 13 points, senior guard Donovan Boyle had 6, sophomore John Arnold 4 and junior Gavin Blunt 2.
The boys host Revere on Feb. 10 and undefeated Copley on Feb. 14 in American Conference games.
