Aurora -- There are times when a coach can get just as much out of his team in defeat as in victory. That was the case for the Aurora volleyball team in a loss at state-ranked Strongsville.

Aurora went down Sept. 17 by a score of 19-25, 11-25 and 24-26. But the match gave the locals (5-4 overall) an opportunity to play against Ohio's 19th-ranked Division I club.

"Going into the match, we knew we had a tough test ahead," pointed out head coach Tyler Price. "Strongsville is ranked in the state for a reason.

"We hung in there and gave them a fight in game one. When we came out in game 2, we made some very uncharacteristic mistakes while playing outside of our normal style.

"I made some switches to some of the underclassmen for game 3 and we had some chances to steal a game and push it to 4 games."

But Aurora made some errors down the stretch against the Mustangs.

"I'm proud of the way the team fought back after a devastating game 2 loss. We can hang with any team, and we hope matches like this can help us when we get to the postseason."

Seniors April Davis, Emily Stepanek and Anna Davis led against Strongsville, along with sophomore Morgan Copley.

April Davis led in digs with 17, Anna Davis had 21 assists, Stepanek had 3 blocks and Copley had 7 kills and 3 aces.

The Greenmen pulled out a tough win Sept. 15 at Willoughby South, 25-19, 25-16, 16-25, 25-21.

Junior middle hitter Sydney McDowell produced 14 kills and 4 aces, while Copley had 13 kills and 4 blocks.

Leading the team in digs was April Davis with 25, sophomore Brooke Besinger had 12 kills and Anna Davis had 41 assists.

Aurora moved to 2-1 in the Surburban League with a win Sept. 13 at Copley by a score of 25-15, 25-20, 25-23.

"After we had a heartbreaking loss to Revere, we were able to bounce back with a conference win against Copley," said the coach.

Anna Davis had 31 assists, Copley had 14 kills and 4 aces, April Davis had 19 digs and Besinger added 4 blocks.

The Greenmen will host Revere on Oct. 4 in a Volley for The Cure event. On Sept. 21, Aurora will host Barberton, then will host Kent Roosevelt on Sept. 22 and travel to Barberton on Sept. 27.
