Aurora -- The Greenmen volleyball team battled Mentor to four games in a tough loss in the season opener.

It was the debut for first-year head coach Tyler Price as the hosts lost 26-24, 15-25, 16-25 and 16-25.

AHS was to open Suburban League American Conference play Aug. 30 at Kent Roosevelt. The locals host Barberton on Sept. 1.

Price inherits five returning players from a squad that went 10-11 last fall.

"Overall, I'm very proud of the way the girls played," said Price. "Mentor is an extremely tough team that has the potential for a deep postseason run. In previous years, the chances of Aurora even winning one game were slim to none."

Senior libero Anna Davis led the way with 2 aces and 26 assists. Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Copley contributed 11 kills.

"[Twin sisters] April and Anna Davis anchored the defense against Mentor with 23 and 22 digs, respectively," said Price.

"We had a game plan going into the first game, and it led us to a win," he added. "We got away from that in the following sets.

"It was the first match of the season, and there were some good moments and some moments that we can address for future matches."°
