Aurora -- The Greenmen boys golf squad continues to work hard in the early portion of its schedule and are hopeful of improving.
Aurora opened the season Aug. 5 at the Suburban League preseason tournament at Ravenna's Windmill Lakes Golf Course (par 70, 6,503 yards) and placed third with a strong showing in the American Conference.
Senior Jack Schroeder led Aurora with a strong top 10 finish as he carded an 81.
At the Suburban League tourney, Highland won with a score of 324, followed by Revere 326, Aurora 340, Copley 350, Kent Roosevelt 356, Tallmadge 392 and Barberton 410.
As mentioned earlier, Schroeder fired an 81 and Thorn had a solid 84.
"Both Jack and Jeremy shot 39s on the back nine," said Munson. "Jeremy's back nine included a birdie on the par 3, 12th hole."
Avalon played well, carding an 87, and Snyder was right there with an 88.
"Every player on the team improved their scores on the back nine after playing the front," noted Munson. "I was proud of their effort, and we will continue to work to improve."
Maselli pitched in with a 93, while another first year player -- James Robinson -- chipped in with a 97. The latter is a 6-foot-4 junior.
Head coach Dave Munson was thrilled with the effort, as his Greenmen have also competed in three other tournaments.
In a strong field, Aurora placed 14th (354) at the Twinsburg Invitational on Aug. 11 at GlenEagles Golf Course.
Avon Lake beat Medina Highland for team honors -- 302-312. Individual results weren't available as of this writing.
Meanwhile, it was senior Jeremy Thorn's turn to shine at the Nordonia Classic on Aug. 9 at Ellsworth Meadows Golf Course in Hudson.
Thorn fired a team-best 82. Aurora finished ninth out of 18 teams with a 348. Brecksville beat Highland 311-319 for the team crown.
Nordonia's Drake Tobias was medalist with a 74, while Brecksville's Shane Strongosky had a 75, followed by Copley's J.T. Forster and Highland's Dave Laib with 76s.
Munson, who is looking for steady improvement from his unit, also liked Will Snyder's play as the senior carded an 88.
Schroeder and junior Michael Avalon each posted 89, while sophomore Matthew Maselli added a 95.
Aurora placed 11th out of 16 schools at the loaded Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy Invitational on Aug. 8 at Silver Lake Country Club. The locals shot 360, with Hudson taking the team title with 311.
Posting a solid round of 85 was Schroeder to pace Aurora. Thorn carded 89, Avalon 92, Snyder 94 and Maselli 94.
Aurora is set to compete today (Aug. 17) at the Canfield tournament at Tippecanoe Country Club.
The locals meet Solon at Club Walden on Aug. 19, will host Kent on Aug. 20 at Barrington and will play a the University School Invitational on Aug. 22 at Windmill Lakes.
