Aurora -- The local varsity boys golf squad continues to work on its game -- both short and long -- as the league schedule is in full swing.
Under first-year head coach David Munson, the Greenmen have had their moments and are improving.
Looking to defend a league championship, Aurora went undefeated in the Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division in 2013.
In CVC action recently, the Greenmen beat West Geauga 168-193 on Aug. 28 at Barrington Golf Club, as senior Chris Sloe with a 40 and junior Parker Barnes carded a 41.
Support came from sophomore Jeremy Thorn, who added a 43, plus junior Jack Brubaker (44), sophomore Jack Schroeder (45) and senior Adam McCullough (49).
The Wolverines were paced by Zach Kirchner, who fired a 3-over-par 39.
On the day before, Aurora beat Gates Mills Hawken 173-191 at Club Walden, as Sloe had a round of 41 and the Hawks were paced by Devesh Modi's 41. Brubaker carded a 43, Barnes 44, McCullough 45, Schroeder 46 and Thorn 46.
In a tight league match Aug. 26 at Highland Park, Aurora edged Orange 156-158, as Sloe was outstanding, shooting one-over-par 36. Gabe Blum led Orange with a 36, but Aurora had better balance, as Barnes carded a 38, McCullough and Brubaker 41, Schroeder 42 and Thorn 47.
Aurora competed in the strong 20-team University School Invitational at Windmill Lakes in Ravenna on Aug. 23, placing 16th. Individual scores were not available.
In upcoming action, Aurora hosts Perry in league action Sept. 4, competes in the Walsh Jesuit Invitational on Sept. 6 at Brookledge and plays a league match at Kenston on Sept. 9.
On Sept. 14-15, Aurora will compete in the Kiely Cup at Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland. The CVC end-of-season tournament is Sept. 17 at Windmill Lakes.
