Two win tennis titles

Western Reserve Racquet Club in Streetsboro conducted its annual Scott Schultz Memorial Junior Tennis Tournament on July 12-13.

Aurora residents Irene and Chas Norman competed and each was the champion in their respective age group (Irene in girls 16 and Chas in boys 14).

Other Aurorans participating were Reece DeAnna and Bradley Kennis (boys 16), Lindsey Jochum (girls 16) and Brianna Rawlings and Caroline Scarazzo (girls 14).

The tournament takes place each summer and is sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association.

Golf results are noted

In the regular division of the Northern Ohio PGA's Stroke Play Series 6 tournament July 14 at Kirtland Country Club, Barrington asssistant pro Katie Jenior tied for sixth place at 1-over-par 71 and earned $500. Gary Trivisonno tied for 16th at 73 and pocketed $212.50 and Barrington head pro Mark Sierak tied for 32nd at 76.

In the senior division, Walden's Mitch Camp claimed first place with a 1-over-par 71 and earned $700, Trivisonno's 73 put him in third with a $350 payoff and Gus Mehallis finished 10th at 81 and was out of the money.

In the recent Rainbow Run, Aurorans Reece Emrick and Garrett Clark finished eighth (28:39.2) and 10th (31:59.4), respectively, in men 14 and under.

Brooke Cedar placed 26th in women 15-19 in 33:27.9, while the following competed in the women 40-49 division: Margaret Emrick, fourth in 28:40.5; Joyce Cieslak, seventh in 31:46.1; and Amy Clark, 14th in 42:16.

Meanwhile, five Aurorans ran in the July 5 Tree City 5K in Kent. Results were: Maddy Wolkov, third in 35:44, and Olivia French, fourth in 37:35, in women 11-15; Wendy French, fifth in women 45-49 in 47:05; Dusty Bond, ninth in men 30-34 in 33:22; and Matt French, 11th in men 45-49 in 47:08.

In the Friday Night Lights 5K in Mentor July 18, Jimmy Mehallis placed second in men 11-12 in 22:17 and his mom Debbie was first in women 45-49 in 22:25.

Kent triathlon coming

The Black Squirrel Adventure Triathlon will take place Aug. 2 at 9 a.m. in Kent. It features a 2-mile trek down the Cuyahoga River via canoe or kayak, a 7-mile bicycle ride and a 5K run.

If registered in advance, participants can enter as individuals, teams or relays. Fees are $35 for an individual, $70 for a team and $80 per relay team. Day of race signups must pay an additional $10 in each category.

in huge hoops tourney

A handful of Aurorans played on the Power Hoops fifth- and eighth-grade teams in the Cleveland Continental Cup basketball tournament recently.

They are Jack Arnold, Cooper and Mason Bizjak, Gabe Elsawy and Koa Bonner for the fifth-grade team and Zach Elsawy and Cade Huffman for the eighth-grade team.

The fifth-graders competed in a seventh-grade division and made the semifinals, losing to Air Attack and a team from Greece. The eighth-graders played at Quicken Loans Arena and lost in the championship game to Ithaca Elite from New York.

Power Hoops first AAU season ended with great success, as the club played in six championship games, qualified for the AAU Nationals, plus participation in the Continental Cup and other prestigious tourneys.

7 in youth golf tourney

Seven Aurora youth golfers teed off July 21 in the first of two rounds of the Matt Mishler Junior Portage County Amateur tournament at Windmill Lakes in Ravenna. They were Conor O'Callaghan, Sam Nowak, Adam McCullough, Jeremy Thorn, Alex Avalon and Chris Sloe in the boys 16-19 age group and Michael Avalon in the boys 13-15 age group. Novak qualifier results

In the final Kenny Novak Memorial Golf Tournament qualifier of the season at Fox Den in Stow, Aurorans fared as follows: boys 16-19 -- Conor O'Callaghan, tied for 10th at 7-over-par 79, Christopher Sloe, tied for 26th at 83; and Jack Brubaker, tied for 33rd at 85; boys 13-15 -- John Burns, tied for 12th at 81; Jeremy Thorn, 19th at 86; and Matthew Maselli, 40th at 108. The Novak tourney will be July 30-31 at Club Walden.
