Micale guides softballers

At the Board of Education's March 17 meeting, Jenna Micale was awarded a supplemental contract as the new Aurora High School softball head coach. The Board also accepted her resignation from a supplemental assistant coaching position.

The Board also awarded the following supplemental contracts: John Kudley as AHS boys track head coach, Corey Houlahan as assistant boys track coach, Sara Anthony as assistant girls track coach, Adam Hoover as Harmon assistant track coach and Gregory Beder as a softball assistant.

Burger an all-American

in huge mat tournament

The 25th annual National High School Collegiate Association Wrestling Championships took place last weekend in Virginia Beach. Over 3,500 wrestlers competed in what is known as the "Crown Jewel of High School Wrestling."

Josh Burger of Aurora High School earned All-American honors in the sophomore division with a pin in the finals over his opponent from North Carolina in just less than two minutes. Burger wrestled seven matches and was 5-2.

He opened with a 2-0 win over an opponent from Florida and then lost a 4-2 decision to the same guy he beat in the finals. Burger pinned his third opponent from North Carolina in the first period and then battled a foe from Nevada to a 3-2 win in an ultimate-tie-breaker bout.

Burger defeated his fifth opponent from Pennsylvania 3-1 before losing to a Florida opponent who eventually placed third.

This is the second time Burger has earned All-American status. The first was last year when he placed sixth overall in the freshman division. Burger recently placed eighth in the Ohio high school state tournament.

Polks play on and coach

Warriors girls hoops unit

The DG Warriors eighth-grade girls elite basketball team continued its solid play coming off last July's success in AAU Nationals by winning the first tournament of the 2014 AAU season.

Sydney Polk of Aurora is a member of the team, which is coached by Derick Polk and Eric Maynard. The team went undefeated in the Twin cities Tipoff, winning every game leading up to the championship game by an average of 30-plus points and beat SMAC Elite 41-37 in the title game.

Other players are Jasmina Soto and Lexi Scarton of Middleburg Heights, Corenna Maynard of Kenston, Madison Sangston of Southeast, Traci Wright and Lorenza Chiarappa of Hudson, Jasmine Kinsey of Solon, Karlie Campeau and Sammy Barnes of Mentor and Maddison Garinger of CVCA.

Soccer camp is coming up

Challenger Sports will conduct a British soccer camp June 23-27 in Aurora. Each participant will be coached by a member of Challenger's team of 1,100 British soccer coaches flown to the U.S.

Each camper will get a free T-shirt, soccer ball, giant soccer poster and personalized skills performance evaluation. Those who sign up online at least 45 days before will receive a British soccer replica jersey.

Eight compete in 5M run

In the St. Malachi 5-miler recently, Ricky Vincik of Aurora placed 16th in 43:16.03 in boys 15-19, Maria Piazza was 112th in 48:02.22 in women 30-34, Tim Vincik was 56th in 41:04.81 in men 40-44, Natalie Nuzzo was 71st in 53:34.41 and Patti Kelley was 83rd in 57:10.71 (both women 45-49) and Terry Spisak was 25th and Steve Marlow was 77th in 48:24.22 (both men 50-54) and Karen Lackey was 18th in 45:03.84 in women 50-54.

Runs slated this weekend

Runs coming up this weekend include the 12th annual Jog Into Spring at Independence Civic Center and Team Hope Cure Huntington's Disease at Edgewater Park in Cleveland, both on April 5, and the Towpath Half-Marathon in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Race to the MAX at Hayes Career and Technical High School in Cleveland, both April 6. Schroeder records a 159

Aurora High School graduate Scott Schroeder shot rounds of 79 and 80-159 as his Baldwin-Wallace College men's golf team finished fourth out of six teams at the recent Muskingum University Spring Invitational near Zanesville. He is a freshman. The team will play in the Ohio Wesleyan University Strimer Memorial Invitational on April 6 at Oakhaven Golf Club.

Kovalik pitching well
Aurora High School graduate John Kovalik recorded his fourth save in one game and then picked up the win in the other game as Slippery Rock University’s baseball team swept a doubleheader over California University, Pa. on March 28.
The senior righthander is 2-0 on the season. He has pitched 21 innings, struck out 21 batters and has a 0.42 earned run average.

Weather affects play
Aurora High School’s varsity baseball team was scheduled to open the season March 29 with games at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware against Lexington and Big Walnut. However, poor weather and field conditions canceled those games.
The JV and varsity softball, JV, varsity and freshman baseball and varsity boys tennis teams were scheduled to play April 1, but those contests might have been wiped out, too.
Today, the varsity baseball team is scheduled to play at St. Edward and the JV and freshman baseball teams is slated to host St. Edward, but again weather will determine if the games are played.

Youth baseball news
The Aurora Baseball League directors will meet April 6 at 7 p.m. in Howard Hanna’s community room. ABL recreation practice will begin April 7 and an umpires clinic will be April 12.
