AHS grad heads mat event
Aurora High School graduate and Mantua resident Dean Olson has founded and is the director of the United States Girls Wrestling National Championships, which will take place March 21-23 at Perry High School in Lake County.
It is an open tournament for girls in grades K to 12.
Olson has donated his time with the U.S. Girls Wrestling Association to direct the Ohio girls wrestling tournament for the last four years. That tourney has taken place for 16 years and will be March 8 at Chippewa High School in Doylestown (Wayne County).
Olseon has started the process to make Ohio State Girls Wrestling Inc. a 501c3 organization, and it will sponsor the new nationals tourney.

Hoops tourneys continuing
Two school districts adjacent to Aurora have sent girls basketball teams to Ohio’s Division I regional tournament, while two Chagrin Valley Conference schools have advanced to the regional level in Divisions III and IV.
In Division I, Solon was to take on Canton McKinley and Twinsburg was to face North Canton Hoover on March 4 at the Canton Civic Center, with the winners meeting March 7 at 7:30 p.m. for a berth in the state tournament in Columbus. Solon eliminated Aurora in the sectional tournament.
The Beachwood Bison will play Pymatuning Valley tonight (March 5) in Division III at 8 at Cuyahoga Falls High School, with the finals set for March 8 at 1:30 p.m., while the Cuyahoga Heights Redskins will face Ashland Mapleton in Division IV on March 6 at 6:15 p.m. at Massillon Perry, with the finals March 8 at 7:30 p.m..
Meanwhile, in boys district basketball, CVC schools Chagrin Falls and Orange in Division II, Beachwood in Division III and Fairport Harding and Richmond Heights in Division IV were still alive heading into this week.
