Aurora matmen go 1-1 in final match; sectionals next

Aurora -- The Greenmen wrestlers closed out their regular season Feb. 6 in a triangular match, losing to Maple Heights 28-27 and beating Garfield Heights Trinity 64-0.

Kevin Boysza (145) and Bubba Arslanian (152) had good efforts and earned wrestlers of the week honors.

Boysza, a senior, flattened two opponents and Arslanian, a freshman, beat a Maple Heights state place winner 9-5 and pinned a Trinity foe.

Freshman Jarrod Brezovec (113) and senior Brian Evans (170) recorded pins against Maple Heights, while sophomore Justin Rosselot (106) and Carter Driscoll (132) earned decisions by 1-0 and 4-0 counts, respectively.

Against Trinity, sophomore Josh Burger (285) had a pin, freshman Kain Beaston (182) had a 14-3 major decision and decisions were earned by freshman J.T. Rose (160) and junior A.J. Suchovsky (215). Winning by forfeit were Rosselot, Brezovec, Danny Novak, Sal Petrash, Driscoll and Brian McNamara.

The JVs competed at Hawken. Winning two matches each were Alex Nelson (132), Brian Kingure (152), Will Lovell (145), Beaston (170) and Josh Loudon (138). Winning one match each were Connor Bizjak (145), Josh Kane (152) and Dominic Stuber (132).

Coach Dick Bliss said the JVs came home a little battered after a triangular against Revere's and Parma Normandy's varsity teams. Stuber, Nelson and Dean Hayden (220) each record one pin, while Lovell and Kane won by forfeit.

The varsity will travel to Austintown Fitch on Feb. 14-15 for the Division I sectional. Action starts Feb. 14 at 3:45 p.m. and Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students. The top four individuals in each class go to the district .

Bliss' weekly awards are:

Top wrestlers -- Boysza and Arslanian; most takedowns -- Arslanian with seven; fastest fall -- Burger in 1:10; coach's award -- Beaston, who filled in and bumped up a weight class; key match -- Rosselot's 1-0 decision to keep the locals in the Maple Heights match.

Most exciting match -- Arslanian, who Bliss said "dominated with aggressiveness; top practice wrestler -- McNamara, who is working hard to get back to his competitive condition, said Bliss; top JV wrestler -- Hayden with two pins; top sophomore effort -- Driscoll; top freshman effort -- Arslanian.

Tickets are available for the state tournament Feb. 27-March 1. Books are $56. Fans can order from Bliss by writing a check made out to "Aurora Athletics."
