Aurora matmen move to the semifinals in Ohio duals event

Aurora -- The Greenmen varsity wrestling team has advanced to the semifinals in the OHSAA dual meet tournament, and will wrestle Uniontown Lake today (Jan. 29) at 5 p.m. at Massillon Perry High School. If they win that match, they will wrestle in the finals immediately afterward.

Aurora won its first two matches last week, topping Boardman 45-25 and Austintown Fitch 33-29.

Winning two matches were Jarrod Brezovec, Josh Whitelaw, Sal Petrash, Angus Nietert, A.J. Suchovsky, Dean Hayden and Josh Burger.

AHS beat Boardman with four pins, a technical fall, a major decision and two decisions.

Against Fitch, which had edged Kenston earlier, the locals were down 23-14 after the 152-pound match. But wins by Brian Evans, Suchovsky, Hayden and Burger enabled the Greenmen to edge ahead and win.

On Jan. 25, AHS traveled to Twinsburg for the Cable 9 triangular, beating Twinsburg 46-20 but losing to Nordonia 39-29.

Against the Knights, Danny Novak, Bubba Arslanian and Suchovsky recorded pins, Brezovec won a 22-6 technical fall and Evans and Burger each won by decision. Suchovsky pinned a state-ranked opponent.

Against Twinsburg, Carter Driscoll and Suchovsky had pins, White won a major decision and decisions were earned by Petrash, Cole Gavin, Evans and Hayden, while Brezovec, Novak and Burger won by forfeit.

Tough luck befell Nietert as he injured his elbow and had to withdraw and default. He was winning at the time. "Hopefully, we'll get him back on the mat in short order," said coach Dick Bliss.

The JVs fared well last week at the Greater Cleveland Wrestling Coaches Association event and at Chardon.

Matt Crissman, Jordan Pollard, Josh Loudon and Kain Beaston went 3-0 in the coaches event, while Driscoll and Alex Nelson won two matches and Justin Rosselot and Brian Kingure each won one.

At Chardon, Nelson, Crissman, Loudon, Driscoll, Will Lovell, Connor Bizjak and Kingure went 2-0, while Rosselot and Josh Kane each won one. "A great week for our JVs," Bliss said.

Aurora High School will be the site of the Chagrin Valley Conference tournament Jan. 31-Feb. 1, with 17 teams starting Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. and action continuing Feb. 1 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Six places will be awarded in each class.

Other teams are Beachwood, Berkshire, Cardinal, Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga Heights, Painesville Harvey, Hawken, Independence, Kenston, Kirtland, Newbury, Orange, Perry, Richmond Heights, West Geauga and Wickliffe.

Current AHS varsity records (10-win minimum) are: Brezovec 27-2, Burger 24-4, Whitelaw 22-4, Arslanian 21-7, Evans 20-11, Novak 19-11, Petrash 19-11, Hayden 18-9, Gavin 16-12, Nietert 16-14, Suchovsky 15-12, Rosselot 12-8, Andrew Petersen 11-1 and Lovell 10-13.

Bliss' weekly awards are:

Top wrestler -- Suchovsky went 4-0 with three pins; most exciting match -- Hayden with a 4-2 overtime win over Fitch; fastest fall -- Burger in 39 seconds over a Boardman foe; key match -- Hayden; most takedowns -- Brezovec with 10.

Coach's award -- Bizjak and Lovell, who were pressed into action at the state duals and Cable 9 and helped the team; top practice wrestler -- J.T. Rose; top JV wrestlers -- Crissman and Loudon (5-0) and Beaston (4-1); top sophomore effort -- Burger (4-0 and two pins); top freshman effort -- Brezovec (4-0).
