Aurora -- The Greenmen varsity wrestling team dropped a hard-fought dual match to neighboring Crestwood 43-24 on Jan. 17. "The meet featured many spirited matches, and the excitement of a very good dual meet took over the crowd," said AHS coach Dick Bliss.

Freshman 106-pounder Jarrod Brezovec earned an 11-0 major decision over a state-ranked opponent, while junior Josh Whitelaw managed a 15-0 technical victory at 113 and Danny Novak was in a spirited match and recorded a pin at 120.

The meet started at 182 pounds, where junior Angus Nietert had a rematch with a wrestler who had beaten him last year in the state duals. He won 4-0 and earned grappler of the week honors.

Aurora forfeited to a state-ranked wrestler at 195, then junior A.J. Suchovsky came up short 6-5. Heavyweight Josh Burger had a rematch from last year and planted his opponent in 2:56.

"At the end, we ran into the strength of Crestwood's lineup, as five Ohio-ranked matmen competed over the next seven weight classes, and unfortunately we failed to upset a single one of them," said Bliss, who added AHS's varsity dual record is now 1-1.

The OHSAA state dual meet starts today (Jan. 22), with Aurora competing at 6 p.m. at Austintown Fitch High School. The first-round opponent is Boardman. If victorious, the Greenmen would immediately wrestle the winner of the Austintown Fitch-Kenston dual meet, with the winner of that one advancing to the district finals on Jan. 29 at a site to be determined.

The annual Cable 9 tri featuring AHS, Twinsburg and Nordonia will be Jan. 25 at Twinsburg. The locals will wrestle Nordonia at 10 a.m. and then Twinsburg right after. The event will conclude with a match between the Knights and Tigers.

Using the same time schedule, the Harmon, Nordonia and Twinsburg seventh- and eighth-grade teams will compete on an adjacent mat. The event will be tape-recorded for playback a couple of times on Channel 9.

The Aurora JVs were scheduled to travel to Lutheran West on Jan. 20 for the Greater Cleveland Wrestling Coaches Association Ron Alexander Memorial tournament, which was a fundraiser for the association. On Jan. 23 the JVs will go to Chardon for a 6 p.m. JV tournament. "We plan to get most of our wrestlers five to six matches this week," said Bliss.
