Aurora -- Losing close games is always tough, but the Aurora girls basketball team really could have used a win against West Geauga.

Head coach Erika Greenberg saw her club drop a heartbreaking 62-60 game Jan. 11 at Chesterland. It was a tough way to lose in the league for Aurora (1-13) as the Wolverines had their first triumph in 12 attempts.

Aurora is still learning how to win as many of the athletes are in their first season of varsity action.

Freshman guard April Davis had the hot hand and exploded for a career-high 20 points for the Greenmen. She scored in a variety of ways and helped in the comeback attempt.

West Geauga led 19-14 after the first quarter, but the Lady Greenmen showed some resilience by bouncing back with a 14-7 second quarter spurt as Aurora was up 28-26 at the half.

However, an 18-9 Wolverine third quarter gave West G. the momentum. Aurora exploded for a season-high 23 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough.

Maria Mims had 11 points, while Hanna Garnek followed up a strong game against Ravenna with a solid 10-point effort. The balanced attack saw 8 points each by Logan Huffman and Joyelle Owens.

Aurora's Sarah Merkel added a bucket, while Kali Bachman, Syarra Sellers and Korie Hobbs each added a free throw.

Meghan Dayringer led the Wolverines with 18 points, while Hanna Zuzek added 14.

On Jan. 8, host Aurora fell to Chagrin Falls (9-4), 43-23. Garnek and Huffman each had 5 points for Aurora, while Davis had 4, Mims added 3 points and Merkel, Owens and Sellers each added a hoop.

Hobbs showed her potential as she had an 11-point, 7-rebound effort in a recent 49-40 loss to Gates Mills Hawken.

"The varsity girls are playing extremely hard and are improving," said Greenberg.

In upcoming action, the Lady Greenmen will host league opponent Perry on Jan. 18, play at Orange on Jan. 21 and host Kenston on Jan. 25 and Painesville Riverside on Jan. 28.
