FROM STAFF REPORTS
Aurora -- The Greenmen varsity wrestling team downed an undermanned Eastlake North team 49-20 on Jan. 11 in the local gymnasium. It was Aurora's first dual of the season.
According to coach Dick Bliss, senior Brian Evans turned in a very solid 16-0 technical fall at 170 pounds to earned wrestler of the week honors and boost his season record to 17-9.
Pins were recorded by freshman Bubba Arslanian at 152 and junior A.J. Suchovsky at 195. Sophomore 132-pounder Cole Gavin recorded a technical fall in a 20-5 win.
Bliss said one of the highlight matches was a 113 pounds, where AHS junior Josh Whitelaw was paired with North senior Shane McLaughlin.
"It was a match of two state-ranked Division I wrestlers, with McLaughlin fresh off a second place at the Kenston tournament," said Bliss.
"Josh started fast with a takedown, then added a 2-point near fall at the end of the first period. In the second, Josh recorded a 3-point near fall to his opponent's escape. The third period was scoreless and Josh rolled to a 7-1 decision."
The Greenmen were aided by forfeit wins by Jarrod Brezovec at 106, Kevin Boysza at 145, Angus Nietert at 182 and Josh Burger at 285.
