Aurora -- Improved defense and taking care of the ball insured that the youthful Aurora High girls basketball team snagged its first win of the year -- 63-37 over Orange on Dec. 6.
Paced by three double-figure scorers, the Greenmen defeated the Lions in the Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division clash to move to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in league play.
"We played much better defense than we did in the game against Perry," said Aurora mentor Erika Greenburg, alluding to the league opening 67-38 loss on Dec. 3.
Talented freshman guard April Davis led the Greenmen with 13 points, while Hanna Garnek scored 12 and Kali Bachman tallied 11. Garnek is a senior guard, while Bachman is a senior forward.
"The girls forced some turnovers and created offense with our defense," said Greenberg. "They did a nice job of moving the ball and finding open looks at the rim. and we also took better care of the ball and limited our turnovers in the second half, which helped."
Sophomore guard Logan Huffman and freshman guard Korie Hobbs each netted 6 points, while sophomore guard Maria Mims scored 5 and Jenna Domos had 4.
Adding 2 points each for the Lady Greenmen were Sarah Merkel, Joyelle Owens and Katie McCoy. Shayna Severin scored 11 points for the Lions.
"Our game against Perry was a tough loss to take as I thought that we were going to do a better job competing with them," said the mentor.
"We played relatively even for most of the first quarter, but we got into a little foul trouble, which really hurt. We're a very young team. Perry did a really nice job of driving and attacking the basket, and we had a hard time stopping them."
Aurora, which will become part of the small school division in the newly reconfigured Suburban League in 2015, lost to Nordonia 79-37 on Nov. 30.
Nordonia (3-0), which will be part of the big school division, erupted for 24 points in the first quarter to lead 24-4, and was up 46-17 at halftime. Garnek led the locals with 10 points.
Davis added 7 points, Bachman 5, Hobbs 4 and Huffman, McCoy and Joyelle Owens each had 2.
In upcoming play, Aurora travels to Kenston on Dec. 13, hosts Copley on Dec. 16 and plays at Cuyahoga Heights on Dec. 21.
