The Chagrin Valley Conference will send a representative to the state football finals this weekend, and three other Cleveland-Akron area teams also will seek state titles.
It took a 22-yard field goal by Brad Hauptman as time ran out to propel Kirtland (14-0) into the Division VI finals, as the Hornets defeated Columbus Ready 10-7 in the semifinals in Mansfield.
The Hornets will face Haviland Wayne Trace (13-1) on Dec. 6 at 11 a.m. in Canton's Fawcett Stadium. It is the third straight state finals game for Kirtland, as the team won the Division V title in 2011 and lost last year.
Kirtland led 7-0 at halftime and Ready tied it in the third quarter. It was Kirtland's closest game of the year; its previous closest margin was 28 points.
Meanwhile, Mentor (13-1) will play for the Division I state title after a 41-38 win over Lakewood St. Edward (12-2).
The Northeast Ohio school will appear in its first state title game since 2007, and will meet Cincinnati Moeller (13-1) on Dec. 7 at 3 p.m. at Fawcett Stadium.
Mentor and St. Edward combined for 1,161 yards of total offense. Cardinals quarterback Conner Krizancic rushed for 129 yards, including the deciding 3-yard touchdown run.
Cleveland Glenville (13-1) will face Loveland (14-0) in the Division II finals on Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. in Fawcett Stadium. The Tarblooders beat Medina Highland (13-1) 41-13 in the semifinals.
Davon Anderson gained 95 yards on 21 carries and tallied a TD for Glenville. Quan Robinson threw to Marshon Lattimore for two touchdowns.
Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary (14-0) will face Trotwood Madison (11-2) on Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at Massillon's Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Division III. SV-M beat Columbus Marion Franklin (12-2) 17-9 to advance. Madison won the state crown in 2011 and SV-M in 2012.
Parris Campbell Jr. gained 193 yards on 23 carries for SV-M, including an 82-yard TD run. The Irish also scored on a 54-yard pass play.
The other state finals in Massillon are: Division IV -- Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (10-4) vs. Clinton Massie (13-1) on Dec. 6 at 3 p.m.; Division V -- Columbus Hartley (13-1) vs. Coldwater (12-2) on Dec. 7 at 11 a.m.; and Division VII -- Glouster-Trimble (14-0) vs. Marion Local (14-0) on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.
