Girls looking for first win

Aurora -- The Greenmen girls basketball team took on two schools which will be a part of the big school division in the newly reconfigured Suburban League in 2015, and lost to both of them last week.

Aurora, which will become part of the smaller school division in the Suburban League, fell to 0-3 after losses to Cuyahoga Falls 36-30 and Nordonia 79-37.

The Greenmen played fairly well in the first half of the Cuyahoga Falls game, leading 19-16 at halftime, but let the lead slip away in the third quarter. The game was tied at 25 after three periods, and the Black Tigers outscored Aurora 11-5 in the fourth quarter.

Logan Huffman tallied 9 points to lead Aurora, while Maria Mims added 6, Kali Bachman had 4, Hanna Garnek and Korie Hobbs 3 each, April Davis and Sarah Merkel 2 each and Katie McCoy 1.

On Nov. 30, Nordonia (3-0) erupted for 24 points in the first quarter to lead 24-4, and was up 46-17 at halftime.

Garnek led the locals with 10 points, the first double-digit effort of the year. Davis added 7 points, Bachman 5, Hobbs 4, and Huffman, McCoy and Joyelle Owens 2 each.

The girls were scheduled to open Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division play on Dec. 3 against Perry. They will host Orange on Dec. 6 and travel to Parma Senior on Dec. 11.

Meanwhile, the Aurora varsity boys were rescheduled to open the season Dec. 3 against Nordonia. They will play Dec. 7 at Perry and host Western Reserve Academy on Dec. 10.
