FROM STAFF REPORTS
Aurora -- The Aurora Greenmen hockey team opened its 15th season recently with a lot of similarities to the early years of the program.
AHS got off to a great start Nov. 29 at Canfield, taking a two-goal lead in the first period before faltering and losing 8-3. It was the third straight loss of the young season.
Freshman Nick Capretta recorded a hat trick, as he was Aurora's only offensive threat. Brandt Vermillion and Kelly Sheridan had two assists and Kenny Pope and Matt Vince each had an assist in the contest.
Aurora also suffered shutout losses to Twinsburg and Olmsted Falls in non-league games. In the Twinsburg game, junior goaltender Matt Taft made 41 saves. "Matt stepped into a big void that we had in goal and is improving every time he gets on the ice," said coach John Sheridan.
The Greenmen open their Blue East league season Dec. 6 against Nordonia at The Pond in Auburn Township. The opening faceoff is at 8:40 p.m. The team then travels to the Gilmour Ice Arena in Mayfield on Dec. 8 for a 4:45 p.m. match against West Geauga.
Sheridan and his staff have a young squad that doesn't have much experience. Junior captain Vermillion and senior assistant captains Sheridan and Pope lead a team of 19 players.
"We're in the process of teaching a young group of players about this great game of hockey," said Sheridan, who begins his 10th season on the Greenmen bench. "We've seen improvement already, and we'll continue to get better individually and as a team, but we're going to have our growing pains."
