Aurora -- The Greenmen's volleyball team reached the sectional championship in Division I play at Solon High, but fell to No. 3 seed Brecksville-Broadview Heights.
In opening tourney action Oct. 14 at Solon, the Greenmen posted a win over No. 8-seeded Garfield Heights by the scores of 25-11, 25-14, and 25-11.
The victory advanced the Lady Greenmen to the Oct. 16 sectional final against the strong Bees (15-8). Aurora lost by the scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-18.
Aurora finished its season at 12-12 overall, while Brecksville meets host and second seed Solon in district action.
Working hard and showing some intensity, Aurora battled against Brecksville, a squad that reached the Ohio Final Four in 2010.
Starters for Aurora head coach Rachael Bailes included Carly Cabot, Baylee Worth, Sydney Sellers, Lani Mitch, Natalie Thomas and Anastasia Gulyavskaya.
The Lady Greenmen vaulted to a surprising 4-0 lead in the first set. However, the Bees then went on a 25-9 surge after a timeout.
Aurora's libero, Karly Mitch, was very active and helped when Aurora used a 4-0 run to cut a Bee lead to 14-11 in the middle set.
Bailes' troops seized a 10-6 lead in the final set, but Kate Stankey's serving ace gave Brecksville a 13-12 lead they would never give up. Stankey also excelled on defense.
