Aurora -- After posting a win to open up the postseason, the Aurora girls soccer team was eliminated 3-0 by Ohio's No. 1-ranked team in Twinsburg in the Division I Kent Roosevelt sectional final.
Aurora (12-5-1) battled in the sectional championship game at Tiger Stadium on Oct. 17.
Veteran head coach Jason Bibza saw his club compete in the match, trying to slow down the Tiger attack. "The final score does not reflect the game or how well we played," said the veteran mentor. "We played extremely well and at times we frustrated them."
However, Twinsburg (16-0-1) was just too much as the Tigers led 1-0 just 1:30 into the clash as the Tigers' second-team All-Ohio standout Nicki Krejci scored off a free set.
"Prior to that score, we had a foul called on us and that led to it," said Bibza. "That was unfortunate to happen with the strong start we had, and to not get that call."
It's a Twinsburg club that has been nationally ranked this fall in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. Aurora had the Tigers frustrated with only a 1-0 score at the half as the Greenmen packed in their defense.
Twinsburg finished in the second half on goals by Brianna Sanborn and Olivia Bongiovanni.
"It was very even at the half and they were getting frustrated a bit," said Bibza. "We had a nice flurry with 15 minutes left and controlled the ball well for a while. We had some chances."
Sanborn's goal was set up by Katie O'Donnell, who assisted with a 50-yard run and then slid the ball to Sanborn for the tally.
"The key was us just relaxing and playing the game like we know how to do," said Twinsburg head coach Chris Gentile, who is the son of Aurora varsity boys coach Chris Gentille.
Bibza was going for the jugular as he elected to send everybody in on the corner kick. "That was a back breaker," said Bibza. "I was being aggressive and I thought we had a shot at scoring."
After Aurora used a big 4-0 win at home over league rival Kenston to secure the Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division title on Oct. 10, the Greenmen had to face the Bombers again in the sectional opener.
Bibza saw his club post a 1-0 victory over the eighth-seeded Bombers (5-9-3) on Oct. 14.
Aurora got a shutout from Nicole Doyle in the nets and had an early goal at the 39:06 mark of the first half as Grace Bollas scored off a header on a feed from Kendall Trudick.
The Greenmen captured a Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division championship this fall and earned a fourth seed for the postseason. Aurora's 12 seniors finished their career with a 35-13 record.
Seniors include Amanda Kovalcheck, Katie Albrecht, Trudick, Riley Armold, Liz Domeck, Maddy Group, Megan Crevar, Kelly Kondick, Kali Bachman, Adrien Helmuch, Helen Krondorfeer and Taylor Banc.
"This was a tremendous class and they will be missed," said the coach.
