Aurora -- With its 14th straight sectional championship, the Aurora High boys soccer squad is set to square off in district action tonight (Oct. 23) at home.
Aurora won 7-0 over Warren Harding on Oct. 19 in the Division I Kent Roosevelt sectional final. The top seeded Greenmen will host a district semifinal game tonight against third-seeded Hudson (10-4-3).
Aurora (11-2-4) got the top seed in the field over a potent field of teams, including Solon, Hudson, and Warren Howland.
"We are playing at a different level right now," said head coach Chris Gentille. "The guys are at a different level with regards to possession, our intensity and our defense. We are excited for districts."
Seniors Trever Wendel and Dalton Browsky, along with junior Nick Perez paced the Aurora offense against Harding (5-9-1).
Wendel and Perez each had five points in the win. Wendel had a goal and three assists, Perez had two goals and an assist, plus Browsky and senior Conner Burns each had a goal and a feed.
Browsky scored in the first 41 seconds of the game and then Wendel answered to make it 2-0 just a few minutes later. Wendel also had two steals.
Junior Anthony Brockway scored a goal, as did freshman Josh Famageltto. Senior Prayag Jina also had an assist.
"Our possession in the game was perfect," said the coach. "I was able to get all of the kids in and rotate to keep the guys fresh."
Senior keeper Justin Pavlick earned the shutout, while junior Matt Gordon also played in the nets. Seniors Ben Lazor, Ryan Studer and Kyle Sutton also played well.
"Our defense stepped up and played well and helped the possession," said Gentille, whose 14 consecutive sectional titles are in the top five streaks in Ohio.
As for Hudson and the district tourney, Gentille thinks his squad is ready "Our schedule has helped us prepare for the post season, and I think we are peaking at the right time," he said.
