Aurora -- With some recent lineup changes, the Aurora High volleyball team placed third at the Field Invitational and hopes to climb the ladder in Chagrin Valley Conference play.
Aurora went 2-1 at Field and beat the hosts 25-16, 25-19 for third place. AHS also beat Western Reserve Academy and fell to Akron Hoban.
"We lost a close match to a very competitive Hoban team," said Aurora head coach Rachael Bailes, whose club fell to 4-7 overall.
Aurora was 0-3 in the CVC heading into this week's action. The locals host Orange on Sept. 19, host Kenston on Sept. 24 and play at Chagrin Falls on Sept. 26. In non-league action, the Lady Greenmen play at WRA on Sept. 21.
"We hope to do well in our upcoming league games and we'll have everyone back," said Bailes.
AHS was led at Field by Karly Mitch (48 digs for the three matches) and Carly Cabot (50 assists). Against WRA, Sydney Sellers posted six kills and four blocks, while Anastasia Gulyavskaya had six kills, Cabot 16 assists, Mitch 14 digs and Rachel Brandon four blocks.
Sophomore Laney Mitch played outside hitter against Hoban and fared well, leading Aurora with six kills.
"I thought Gulyavskaya and Laney Mitch played really well," said Bailes, who also praised Karly Mitch and Cabot. "Gulyavskaya has been playing some outside hitter lately and is doing well for a freshman. Laney Mitch led us in kills and is coming along really well."
Brandon and Sellers each had five blocks against the Knights while Karly Mitch posted 22 digs and Cabot 15 assists.
In the win over Field, the Lady Greenmen were led by senior Baylee Worth, who had six kills. She had missed five games for personal reasons and her return boosted Aurora in the middle and by the net. "It was nice to have Baylee back," said Bailes.
Brandon, a 5-foot-11 middle hitter, had four blocks and four block assists, while Cabot led with 19 assists. Karly Mitch had 12 digs.
"Brandon is a first-year junior for us and she's improving" said her coach. "She had 13 blocks."
