Aurora -- The Greenmen's varsity boys golf team is beginning to find its rhythm in the early season.
Aurora won 153-187 over Hawken on Aug. 22 as senior Alex Avalon continues to lead the charge of an experienced squad. Avalon was medalist with a 37 and received support from senior Sam Nowak, sophomore Jack Brubaker and senior Conor O'Callaghan.
Nowak fired a 38 and Brubaker and O'Callaghan had 39s. Junior Christopher Sloe had a 41 and sophomore Parker Barnes a 41. Eric Gielser led Hawken with a 39.
"We won another one!"said excited head coach Gus Mehallis after the win on Aurora's home course -- Barrington Golf Club.
Despite having some key graduation losses from last year's eighth-place state tournament team in Division I, Aurora is continuing to be solid this season.
AHS posted a huge win -- 150-161 -- on Aug. 21 over Chagrin Falls at Barrington. Avalon fired a sizzling 33, while Sloe carded a nice round of 37, finishing ahead of Chagrin's Daniel Berlin (38).
On Aug. 19, Aurora won the team championship in the 16-team Canfield Invitational at Tippecanoe Country Club, with 308 strokes, topping standout teams from East Liverpool, Girard, Canfield, and Austintown Fitch.
"That's a very good score on a great course. I was really pleased," said Mehallis. "The highlight of the day for us was Avalon's 73 to tie for medalist honors."
"Even though he lost in a playoff, he played a real solid round. His confidence will help him as we begin our conference matches this week."
Canfield's Dom Carano (73) won over Avalon on the first playoff hole. Mark Standohar (74) of Struthers was third. O'Callaghan (78) and Sloe contributed again for the Greenmen, while Nowak had a 79.
Meanwhile, the Greenmen finished in 10th place in the 18-team University School Invitational on Aug. 24. Sloe led the team with 77, followed by O'Callaghan's 78, Alvalon's and Barnes' 80, Nowak's 83 and Brubaker's 90. St. Ignatius won the event, with St. Edward as runnerup.
Tommy Riedy is another senior on the roster, along with junior Adam McCullough.
In upcoming action, Aurora will play Aug. 29 against West Geauga at Fowler's Mill, Sept. 3 against Beachwood at Walden and Sept. 7 against Walsh Jesuit at Brookledge in Cuyahoga Falls.
