FROM STAFF REPORTS
Aurora -- The 2013 Aurora High School girls golf season is off and rolling under coach Noah Goodman.
In the first week of the season, the Greenmen started off 2-0 for the first time in the last four years with wins over Shaker Heights and Tallmadge.
In the Kent Roosevelt Rough Rider Invitational, the team finished 10th of 10 afternoon flight teams with 436 strokes. Kent Roosevelt won the flight at 320, while Medina Highland won the morning flight at 366.
Scores for AHS were: Asia Lerner 91, Natalia Nelson 94, Gia Leone 121, Erin Murphy 130 and Sydney Shock 133.
The squad is anchored by two returning second team all-Chagrin Valley Conference players in junior Lerner and senior Nelson. Lerner was the medalist in the first two dual matches.
"Both have already showed a higher level of play than where they left off last season," said Goodman.
Junior Erin Grohe was honorable mention in the CVC last year. "Her hard work in the off-season has shown in two scores below her last year's average," said Goodman.
Also contributing to the team is returning letter winner and last year's most improved player award winner -- junior Murphy. New to the program are junior Shock and freshman Leone. "Both are new to the game and early signs point to them being great additions to the program,"said the coach.
With the closing of Aurora Golf Club, the girls are playing home matches at Barringtion Golf Club, Club Walden and Grantwood Golf Course.
"If the mark of a successful season is constant improvement leading to team success, then the lady Greenmen are off to a great start," Goodman said. "Hopefully, this momentum will carry over to the weeks to come."
