in Wigs for Kids 5K run
Other than the Mehallis family, who was mentioned in last week's "Sports Wire," several Aurora residents participated in the Wigs for Kids 5K run at the Cleveland Metropark Zoo.
In men 14 and under, locals competing were: Jack Sovich, seventh in 24:16.7; Zachary Elsawy, 16th in 28:18.1; and James Robinson, 17th in 28:32.2.
In women 14 and under: Liz Keller, 205h in 28:59.5; Josie Stummer, 27th in 34:17; Abby Jensen, 28th in 34:18; Julia Robinson, 29th in 35:51.5; and Sidney Hilston, 32nd in 36:03.7.
In men 15-19: Zach Jenkins, eighth in 23:06.4; and Brandon Sutton, 16th in 26:51.7.
In women 15-19: Allison Jenkins, fourth in 24:52.7; Halle Sovich, 10th in 26:49.4; Logan Huffman, 11th in 26:59.7; Jacqueline Caputo, 14th in 28:20.5; Emily Keller, 15th in 28:20.7; Megan Phillips, 16th in 29:00.5; and Annie Robinson, 19th in 29:55.5.
In women 40-44: Mary Lynn Phillips, sixth in 29:04.5; Lisa Arnold, eighth in 29:32.2; Toni Carpenter, ninth in 29:35.9; and Conni Hilston, 12th in 31:09.7.
In women 45-49: Julie Austin, 10th in 30:14.2.
O'Callaghan finshes 7th
Conor O'Callaghan of Aurora placed seventh in boys 16-19 in the annual Kenny Novak junior golf tournament at Club Walden last week. He shot 75-81-156. Luke Liberatore won the event in a playoff over Cody Tuttle after both shot 149. Aurora's Evan Lerner completed the first 18-hole round but didn't finish the second round.
2 local pros in tourneys
Mark Sierak, pro at Barrington Golf Club, teamed with Ken Lowe, Mark Levinson, Kevin Lurie and David Grossman to tie for fourth place in the Heroes Fore the House Pro-4 Am golf tournament at Firerstone Country Club North. They shot 31-under-par 113.
Auroran Gary Trivisonno teamed with Curt Studor, Jake Studor, Mike Hargrove and Pat Rollins for sixth place at 114.
Meanwhlie, in the Janic Moodie Pro-Lady tournament at Alliance Country Club, Sierak teamed with Cathy Harless, Joan Musumeci and Diane Hellman to tie for fifth at 15-under-par 129.
Distance runs scheduled
Several more distance runs are on the schedule this weekend in the area, including the Perfect 10-Miler and 5K on Aug. 11 in Lyndhurst. For details, visit www.hmapromotions.net.

Locals on 2 top squads
Three Barrington Golf Club women were on top teams in the Cleveland Women's Golf Association scramble tournament last week at Lake Forest Country Club.
Pamela Nelson and Roberta Privette of Aurora (Barrington) joined Mary Anne Kickel of Macedonia and Cherie Henn of Hudson (Lake Forest) on the second-place team with 67.1 points.
Cathy Harless of Aurora (Barrington) joined Bonnie Abbey of Shaker Heights Country Club, Jane Marshall of Lake Forest and Debroah Evans of The Country Club on the thid-place team with 68.
Top Ox runners are listed
In its second year, Run for the Ox 5K took place during the recent Mantua Ox Roast Fair, with 98 participants running despite steady showers. The top three men were Steve Green, Nathan Schultz and Nathan Green and the top three women were Erin Sullivan, Rosalie Novotny and Emily Bertram. Fall softball kicking off
The men's Tuesday night fall softball league kicked off action Aug. 6, with regular season games running through Sept. 17. The fall coed league will start the regular season Aug. 9 and run through Sept. 20.
Teams in the men's league are DWY Construction (Dave Yoder, manager), Hard Knocks Softball (Nathaniel Rizzo), Panini's (Frank Paparone), Aurora Car Care (Justin Dewitt), Papous Tap & Grille (Chet Marcin) and The Flip Side (Al Marzec).
The coed teams are AES Garage Doors (Bob Richards), Brewster's Bar (Robert Varga), Lonnie's Picks (Renee Pastva), Tri-County Power Tools (Heather Rink), Doogan's (John Rybicki), Brugmann's Sand & Gravel (Al Marzec), Janson Brothers (Bob Kosiosky) and The Misfits (Eric Davis).
Avalon fares well on tour
In North Coast Junior Tour tournaments in July, Aurora resident Alex Avalon took first place with a 38-40-78 in the 16-19 age division at Fowlers MIll Golf Club, while he also finished fourth with 84-76-160 in the Sand Ridge Invitational.
Men's champion crowned
Goodfellas / The Flip Side won the Aurora Parks and Recreation's Friday night men's summer softball tournament title by beating Doogan's 27-16.
The champions beat Rush Hour 27-21 in the semifinals, while Doogan's defeated Ohio State Waterproofing 13-11.
Grid coaches announced
Head coaches for Aurora youth football teams this fall have been anounced and are as follows:
Varsity -- J.R. Papesh, Gold; Chris Kimes, Green; and Wes Rogge, White; junior varsity -- Jeff Fromweller, Gold; E.J. Nemet, Green; and Ed Devine, White.
Picture day for the local teams will be Aug. 17 at 9 a.m. Games will start the last week in August.
