Twinsburg on to state level; 2 boys teams go to regional

Nearby Twinsburg, which defeated Aurora in the Division I sectional tournament at Akron Ellet, is headed to the state girls basketball tournament for the third straight year, while one Portage County boys team -- Windham -- is headed to Division IV regional action.

The Tigers (28-0) had a tough time with Solon (22-5), but escaped with a 44-41 victory March 8 in the regional finals at the Canton Memorial Civic Center. Twinsburg was up by 11 points at halftime.

The Tigers will face Lewis Center Olentangy Orange (26-2) in the state semifinals March 15 at 6 p.m. at Ohio State University's Value City Arena. Ashley Morrissette led Twinsburg against Solon with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Meanwhile, Windham raised its record to 23-2 with an 87-81 win over McDonald for the Division IV regional title and were to battle Villa Angela-St. Joseph (21-4) on March 12 at the Canton Fieldhouse.

VASJ defeated Chagrin Valley Conference member Richmond Heights 67-47 last week. The Spartans ended their season with a 21-4 record.

Windham's Parker Rickey had 24 points, Matt Knight added 23, Cameron Pozsgai 19 and Stephen Kacenski 10.

One CVC school -- Beachwood -- moved on to the Division III regional boys tournament after a 55-52 victory over Gilmour Academy.

The Bison (22-3) will face St. Thomas Aquinas of Stark County in the semifinals tonight (March 13) at 6:15 p.m. at the Canton Fieldhouse.

Beachwood's girls squad (23-3) bowed out of the tournament in the Division III regional finals after a 75-48 pasting by Orrville (26-2), who was led by all-stater Hannah Plybon's 42 points. Plybon will play basketball at Akron starting next season.

Other girls state tourney games are: Division I -- Kettering Fairmont vs. Toledo Notre Dame on March 15 at 8 p.m.; Division II -- Hathaway Brown vs. Clyde and Dayton Chaminade Julienne vs. West Holmes, March 14 at 6 and 8 p.m.

Division III -- Fort Frye vs. Columbus Africentric and Orrville vs. Anna on March at 1 and 3 p.m.; and Division IVS -- Hiland vs. Reedsville Eastern and Ottoville vs. Fort Loramie on March 15 at 1 and 3 p.m.

Other regional boys tournaments involving Northeast Ohio teams are:

Division I -- Mentor vs. North Canton Hoover and Shaker Heights vs. North Royalton tonight at 6:15 and 8 at Wolstein Center, and Nordonia vs. Brecksville-Broadview Heights tonight at 7 at JAR Arena in Akron.

Division II --Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy vs. Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary and Warrensville Heights vs. Youngstown Cardinal Mooney on March 14 at 6:15 and 8 p.m. at Canton Civic Center; Division III -- Leavittsburg Labrae vs. Oberlin tonight at 8;

The Chagrin Falls girls bowed out of postseason play after a loss to Hathaway Brown last week.
