Aurora -- The Greenmen varsity girls and boys basketball season came to an end last week with losses in the Division I sectional-district tournament at Akron Ellet and Solon, respectively.
Both final games of the season were not pretty, as defending state champion Twinsburg defeated the girls 72-29 and Bedford beat the boys 79-43. The girls finished the year with a 16-8 record and the boys were 1-22.
The Tigers (26-0) held the locals to single-digit scoring in all four quarters, while piling up 19, 19, 12 and 22 points.
Brooke Smith tallied 22 points for Twinsburg, followed by Ashley Morrissette with 21 and Baleigh Reid with 12. Morrissette is headed to Purdue University and Smith to Cleveland State.
Camilla Brown topped the Greenmen with 14, while Allison Howard scored 8, Erin McNamara had 4 and Danielle Lasky had 3.
Twinsburg edged Hudson 55-52 in the district finals to move on to the regional tournament this week at Canton Memorial Civic Center.
Meanwhile, Bedford got off to a fast start in the boys game, leading 19-10 after one quarter and tallying 27 points in the second half to take a 46-16 lead at halftime. The Bearcats outscored the locals 18-13 in the third quarter, but Aurora held a 16-15 advantage in the final period.
Ben Branscom was Aurora's only double-figures scorer with 10 points, while Kendall Fayne had 9 points, Drew Daff 6, Pavel Galchenko and Nick Reminder 5 each, Joe Dinardo and Paul Kollat 4 each and Anthony Quaranto 2.
After defeating Aurora, Bedford topped Garfield Heights to move to the district semifinals against Shaker Heights.
