Twinsburg, 2 CVC girls teams make regionals; area boys teams still alive

After easily disposing of Aurora 72-29 earlier in the week, the defending Division I state champion Twinsburg girls basketball squad struggled before posting a 55-52 victory over Hudson to advance to the regional tournament at the Canton Memorial Civic Center.

The 26-0 Tigers were to face Midpark on March 5 for a chance to play either Solon or Mentor in the regional finals March 8.

Twinsburg trailed after each of the first three quarters, but outscored Hudson (20-6) 18-14 in the final quarter for the win. Ashley Morrissette scored 17 points, Char-dell Dunnigan had 13 and Baleigh Reid added 12 for the winners, while Hannah Boesinger canned 25 for Hudson.

Aurora lost to both of the two district finals during the 1012-13 season.

A pair of Chagrin Valley Conference members -- Chagrin Falls and Beachwood -- also advanced to regional tourney play.

Chagrin Falls (20-5) was scheduled to face Hathaway Brown on March 5 in the Division II regional at Barberton. The winner will meet either Canfield or Holy Name in the finals on March 8.

The Tigers beat Cortland Lakeview 53-38 to earn the district crown.

Beachwood (22-2) will face Mogadore (13-13) tonight (March 6) in Division III at Cuyahoga Falls for the right to play either Orrville or Hanoverton United in the regional finals March 9.

Other area teams which advanced to regional play were Rocky River Magnificat, which played Wadsworth in Division I on March 6, and Norton, which played Clyde in Division II on March 6.

The CVC's Kenston girls finished their season 20-6 after a 69-56 Division I loss to Solon. Kenston shared the CVC Chagrin Division title with Chagrin Falls. Mandy Marchant led the Bombers with 22 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL ACTION

Heading into this week's boys district basketball action, three CVC teams were still alive -- West Geauga in Division II, Beachwood in Division III and Richmond Heights, Fairport Harding and Cuyahoga Heights in Division IV.

West G. is slated to play University School on March 7 at Lakeside High School, with the finals March 9. Beachwood was to face Bedford Chanel on March 5, with the finals March 8.

Also on March 5, Richmond Heights was to meet Fairport Harding and Cuyahoga Heights was to battle Cleveland Villa Angela St. Joseph at Garfield Heights. The finals are March 8.

In the Division I district at Solon, from which Aurora was eliminated last week, Cleveland Heights will meet St. Ignatius and Bedford will face Shaker Heights in the semifinals, with finals slated for March 9.

CVC Chagrin Division co-titlists Kenston and Chagrin Falls were eliminated in tourney play last week by Cleveland Heights and Notre Dame Cathedral Latin, respectively.

STATE WRESTLING ACTION

None of the four Crestwood wrestlers who competed in the Division II state tournament claimed championships, but two --138-pound senior Dylan Kager and 120-pound junior Conner Nemec -- earned third and sixth places, respectively. Kager has set several Red Devil school records during his career.

Three Portage County wrestlers earned state titles in Division III -- Waterloo 138-pounder J.J. Diven and Rootstown 170-pounder Travis Linton and 220-pounder Jake Moore. Rootstown (fifth) earned its second straight top 10 finish as a team
