Aurora girls close regular year at 15-7, face Boardman

Aurora -- A successful regular season came to an end last week with two victories for the Aurora High School varsity girls basketball team, which now looks ahead to Division I sectional tournament action.

The Greenmen defeated Notre Dame Cathedral Latin 50-38 and Laurel School 74-45 to end the regular season with a 15-7 overall record. This was the first year that the Ohio High School Athletic Association allowed girls and boys basketball teams to play 22 regular season games.

Against NDCL, Camilla Brown had 24 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocked shots, Allison Howard had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks, Danielle Lasky had 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals and Erin McNamara and Hanna Garnek each had 2 points.

Against Laurel, Howard had a game-high 22 points, with 17 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 blocks and one steal.

According to coach Erika Schultz, Howard went over the 1,000-point career mark in the game. Brown added 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 assists and McNamara scored 9 points and had 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

"We played well in those last two regular season games and are ready for action in the tournament at Akron Ellet," said Schultz.

The Greenmen, who received a bye, will face Boardman on Feb. 21 at 7:45 p.m. Boardman (10-13) upset third-seeded Austintown Fitch 52-42 in a first round game.

The Spartans are led by Emily Gibbs (11.5 points a game) and Kelly Tomcsanyi (10.5 per game). They scored 16 and 15, respectively, against Fitch. Gibbs also pulls down about 9.5 rebounds per game. The.Spartans finished sixth out of seven teams in the Federal League this season.

For fans wishing to attend this week's tourney contest, the best way to get to Ellet High School is go south on Route 43 throughout Kent to Interstate 76, then west to the east side of Akron and get off at the Gilchrist Road-Route 91 exit.

Head south on Route 91 (Canton Road) to the East Market Street-Robindale Avenue intersection and turn left on Robindale. Go two blocks to Woolf Avenue, then turn right and go two more blocks on Woolf to the school.
