Harmon grapplers 8th in Twinsburg tourney, set points record

Aurora -- Harmon School's wrestling team closed out the 2012-13 season by finishing eighth with 122 points in the Twinsburg tournament Feb. 1-2. Wadsworth was the team champion.

The 122 points contributed to a school record of 1,680.5 points in a season, topping the 2009-10 squad's 1,587.5.

Dom Stuber and J.. Rose led the effort with second-place finishes. Stuber went 4-1, including pinning a Crestwood opponent that he lost to earlier in the season. Rose also went 4-1 and lost to a bigger foe from Cuyahoga Falls.

Rose weighs in at 142 pounds and wrestled up a weight class during the year.

Bubba Arslanian took third, going 5-1 with two pins and two technical falls. But his undefeated season ended when he was caught and pinned by the No. 1 seed from Wadsworth in the semifinals.

"His positive energy carried the team throughout the tournament," said coach Paul Frankmann.

Jordan Pollard finished sixth, pinning two and earning two close decisions. One of his losses went into double overtime.

Ryan Scantland went 4-2 to finish seventh, while Jacob Loudon, Josh Loudon and Caleb Tinsley came within one match of placing. Also earning points were Drew McVay, Robby Albrecht and Nate Smierciak.

Kain Beaston was injured and had to drop out and Daniel Droder was sidelined prior to the tourney by an injury. Zach Jenkins and Max Blakeway wrestled well.

Top wrestlers for the final week were Smierciak and Jenkins.

Harmon finished the year with a 20-5 dual meet record. In the last week, the locals beat Newbury 70-12 and West Geauga 48-32. Prior to that, the team beat Nordonia 57-27 and lost to Twinsburg 54-21 in the Cable 9 triangular.

Winning two matches against Newbury and West G. were the Loudons, McVay, Jenkins, Albrecht, Matt Crissman, Scantland, Pollard, Arslanian and Blakeway.

Wrestlers of the week after the Cable 9 tri were Blakeway and Droder.

In a meet featuring B wrestlers from Harmon, Orange, Chardon and Solon, Crissman and Smierciak went 2-0 and other wins were earned by Jenkins, Gavan Baker, Patrick Windsor and Nate Whitelaw. Michael Carrasco, Karson Lund, Virgil Glorioso and Max Keilin wrestled well.
