Aurora -- Six of 14 JAWs (Junior Aurora Wrestlers) who competed in the district tournament over the weekend advanced to the state competition this weekend at Akron Firestone High School.
The locals placed third as a team behind Westshore and Elyria, both of which are club teams which recruit from Northeast Ohio. JAWs is represented by the local community.
Colin McNamara earned a district title at 132 pounds, beating an Avon wrestler 8-0, then grabbed an exciting 5-4 win and rallied from a 6-2 deficit to win 7-6 in the finals.
Will McGhee was second at 100, winning by technical fall, a 28-second pin and a 6-4 decision before losing 10-2 to a Westshore grappler.
Carter Gerbrick at 95 pounds won a pair of 2-0 matches, then came up short 9-0 against a Westshore wrestler and won 4-20 and 2-0 for third place.
Bo DiJulius (56), Kyle Petersen (67) and Sam Devito (90) all took fourth and advanced. DiJulius lost 1-0 in the semifinals, but then prevailed 6-4 before losing 2-1.
Petersen pinned his first foe in 29 seconds, but lost to a Strongsville boy in overtime 4-2. He beat his next two opponents, but lost in a rematch to the same Strongsville grappler.
DeVito lost his first match by technical fall to a Brecksville boy, but then pinned two opponents and beat a Brunswick wrestler 7-2 before losing to the same Brecksville foe.
Nic Willingham and John Papesh made it to the consolation round, but came up short, each losing by a point.
Shane Cheatham, Ben Rogge, A.J. Barner, Justin Lovell, Zach Flynn and Dante Leone wrestled well and contributed to the team score.
