Aurora -- The Greenmen ice hockey squad (2-12-1) snapped a nine-game losing streak with an 8-0 triumph over Nordonia, ending a month of frustration for the icers.
"We really had a tough stretch where we had to play six tough games in 10 days," said coach John Sheridan.
The Greenmen offense was led by defenseman and senior co-captain Canton McElwee, who managed a hat trick and assisted on another goal for a four-point night.
"Canton played very well. He's been a solid player for us all season," said Sheridan.
Kelly Sheridan scored her first two goals of the year, while Brandt Vermillion had a goal and 2 assists. Colin MacDonald and Steve Lawrie also put the puck into the net, while goaltender Rachael Schwartz had a quiet night, facing only 3 shots for her first shutout of the year.
The Greenmen lost to Chagrin Falls on Dec. 24 in the Chagrin Valley Conference tournament, but no score was available. Chagrin Falls beat Kenston for the tourney title.
The squad hopes to start a winning streak as it plays Twinsburg on Jan. 3 at 7:15 p.m. at Garfield Heights, and returns home the next night against West Geauga at 8:40, then closes out the week Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. against Mayfield at Gilmour Academy.
Sheridan is cautiously optimistic looking into he new year. "I think our schedule has us playing on a more even field," he said. "Hopefully, the tough teams we played will help us. Our goal is always to get better as players and as a team."
