Girls hoops team stays undefeated

Aurora -- After being up by 20 points late in the second quarter, the Greenmen varsity girls basketball team struggled to hold on for a 51-45 victory Dec. 29 over visiting Ravenna. The win kept the locals undefeated at 8-0.

Meanwhile the Aurora varsity boys lost a 67-51 non-league contest to Twinsburg on Dec. 28 at home. The boys stood 1-6 heading into the New Year's holiday period.

The girls got off to a slow start against the Ravens, but managed a 14-10 lead after one quarter. They dominated second period play and were up 30-10 just before halftime before a Ravenna player hit a 3-pointer to make it 30-13 at the half.

However, Ravenna whittled away at the deficit in the third quarter, outscoring AHS 22-10 before Aurora won the fourth quarter 11-10.

Alexa DeBord led the locals with 15 points, while Allison Howard added 13. Also scoring were Camilla Brown 9, Erin McNamara 8 and Danielle Lasky 6.

The Greenmen, who are 3-0 in the Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division, will play three straight division games, starting Jan. 4 at Kenston, which also is 3-0, then Jan. 9 at Chagrin Falls and Jan. 12 at home against West Geauga.

As for the boys hoopsters, they got out to a 9-3 lead, but Twinsburg battled back, going on a 17-7 run and leading at halftime, 35-25.

In the third quarter, Aurora used a 12-6 spurt to cut the gap to 49-42. The spurt included 5 points by Nick Reminder off the bench. But that was as close as the Greenmen could come.

Pacing Aurora was Paul Kollat with 14 points and three assists, while Joe Dinardo added 8 points, as the Greenmen tallied seven 3-pointers, but were held to a dozen 2-pointers. Kendall Fayne, Pavel Galchenko and Drew Daff each had 6 points.

The Greenmen get into the meat of their Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division schedule with four straight games against division rivals, starting Jan. 5 at Chagrin Falls and continuing Jan. 8 at Painesville Harvey.
