Aurora -- The 2012-13 season promises to be exciting for the Aurora High School swim team, according to coach Katie Monroe.
"We have added a relay meet for the girls only in January at Orange High School," she explained.
"And the team will attend a new invitational at the Spire Institute in Geneva and return to the Cloverleaf Invitational over the holiday break with many other Division I schools."
The girls and boys teams boast 12 seniors who have been in the program for four to six years, many of whom have middle school experience.
"They are all veterans with a lot of experience and leadership to offer the team," Monroe said. "We have 37 athletes, including five divers (two boys and three girls). It's one of the largest groups we've seen in many years."
Before Thanksgiving, the teams completed an intrasquad meet, with many swimmers achieving close to their personal bests from last season.
"The boys have their sights set on making it to the Division II state meet, and with a continued positive work ethic I have no doubt they will accomplish this goal," said Monroe.
The girls compete in Division I and have 16 swimmers on hand (five are seniors). "The underclassmen have big shoes to fill," Monroe said.
Swimmers posting personal bests at the intrasquad meet were captain Kelly Fussner, sophomores Jessica Ramsey and Maddie Ticer, captains Austin Hayes and Zach Nutting, Brian Wessels, Ricky Vincik and Chris Sloe.
Newcomers to the team are freshmen Josh Friedler, Alyssa Mahle, Brock Nelson, Henry Young, Gabby Yonkers (diver)- sophomores Cameron Gorman, Cameron Goldston and Jake Miller; junior Misha Shatokin and Nolan Honsaker (diver).
Returning to the team after a year hiatus are junior Hannah Brezovec and senior Erin Rugh.
The remaining swimmers are Nate Branscom, Heather Dougherty, Jake Glockner, Hannah Haughey, Allie Hayes, Brandon Hayes, Kelsey Kalinowski, Alix Kokinchak, Taylor Mahle, Broc Miller, Anthony Nedelka, Sammie Nutting and Jenny Young.
Other captains are Austin Hayes and Lauren Steele.
The swimmers' home venue is the pool in Hiram College's Price Gymnasium.
The squad was scheduled to swim at Nordonia on Dec. 4, and will host Crestwood on Dec. 7.
