LETTER: School district heads thank community for vote of confidence

Published:

On behalf of the Board of Education, administrators, teachers and staff of Aurora's schools, we'd like to express sincere gratitude to the voters and Aurora community for passage of the 5.9-mill continuing levy.

We recognize our responsibility to judiciously and efficiently manage the additional funds the taxpayers have provided to the district for the education of our children.

The sacrifice made by many voters to increase taxes in a time of prolonged economic distress is truly appreciated. Our team pledges to continue to do our utmost to provide our students a level of instruction and innovation that has resulted in top state and national rankings.

Rest assured that the additional financing was requested only due to unfunded mandates required of our district by the State Board of Education and legislature combined with significant funding reduction from state revenues.

The new money will enable us to keep the school district financially secure and performing at a high level for at least the next six years, if not longer.

We also would like to thank the many volunteers who worked very hard to ensure passage of the levy. This victory for our kids could not have been accomplished without you.

Gerald Kohanski,

School Board president

Russ Bennett,

schools superintendent
