Elwin “Ed” L. Rooy, age 81, of Aurora, Ohio passed away Friday, September 23, 2016. He was the husband of Carole (Glosner), father of David (wife, Tracy) Rooy of Hudson, Ohio, Joel “Ted” Rooy of Tom’s River, NJ, the late Mark Rooy (wife Janice), and the late Douglas Rooy, brother of Kenneth Rooy of Colorado Springs, CO and Lillian Slocum of Avon Park, FL., grandfather of Nathan, Aaron, Molly, Zandria, Elliot, Rachael, Sabrina, Erin and Sarah, great grandfather of Holly, Brantley, Tyson, and Leo.

Elwin was a graduate of Rhodes High School class of 1952. He earned a full scholarship to Case Institute of Technology where he graduated with a B.S. in Metallurgy. After serving four years in the military as a fighter pilot with the United States Air Force, Elwin joined the Aluminum Company of America, where he worked for thirty-years. He left ALCOA as the Corporate Manager of Metallurgy and Quality Assurance to form a consulting firm specializing in aluminum process and product technologies. Active in committees of the Aluminum Association, American Foundry Society, American Die Casting Institute, The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Society of Die Casting Engineers, ASM International, and TMS. He served as chairman of the TMS Aluminum Committee, chairman of the AFS Light and Reactive Metals Division, director and chairman of the Northeast Ohio chapter of AFS, regional director of the Foundry Education Foundation, charter member of the Drexel/WPI Advanced Casting Research Laboratory and Executive with the U.S. Department of Energy. Elwin’s honors include the AFS award for Scientific Merit, The TMS/AIME Distinguished Service Award, the M.C. Flemings Award for contributions in the field of solidification, the Arthur Vining Davis Award for technical achievement and seven patents. Elwin served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Metals and Advanced Materials & Processes, edited Light Metals and authored, coauthored and published more than thirty publications.
