Operator of flea market
Services for Gilbert E. "Gene" Woodson Sr. will be today (Jan. 30) at 1:30 p.m. at the Green Family Funeral Home & Crematory Service in Mantua, where calling hours will be from 11:30 a.m. until the service.
Mr. Woodson, 86, died Jan. 25, 2013 at his residence in Aurora. Born June 18, 1926 in Trenton, Mich., he was the son of the late Roy and Maude (Richardson) Woodson.
A longtime Aurora resident, he was a former member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. A salesman for furniture companies most of his life; he operated a furniture store at the Streetsboro Flea Market for many years, as well as being the owner-operator of the Streetsboro Flea Market since 2010.
He also was formerly employed by the Nickel Plate Railroad, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a professional roller skater and a United States champion in 1941 and 1942. He enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and worldwide.
On June 24, 1948, he married Margaret E. Woodson, who preceded him in death in 2009. Also preceding him was grandson Ivan "Trey" Horner.
Survivors include his children Gilbert E. (Christine) Woodson Jr. of Streetsboro, Charlene Woodson of Cincinnati, Caren (Ivan) Horner of Rootstown, Cathleen Mitchell of Florida, Cynthia (Joseph) Ruyten of Rootstown, Claudia "Dee Dee" Woodson of Valley City and Cheryl (Clyde) "Butch" Berg of Diamond; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Woodson will receive full military honors provided by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard, assisted by Mantua American Legion Post No. 193, and will be buried in Aurora City Cemetery..
