Surprised by levy failure.

The school levy failed. I had expected it to pass easily. I was surprised, but have an understanding of why. I think the school system here does a pretty good job of educating our children. My three kids managed to survive their time here and two of my grandchildren are presently committed to the struggle. The answer, of course, is taxes. We pay a lot of taxes " a lot of taxes indeed " and those spent on the local school system appear to be achieving the desired results.

Those pushing for the levy did an excellent job of getting information out to the citizens. I was impressed with the breakdown of what was intended, the data assimilated as justification, and the presentation, including drawings, of the classroom additions to the various buildings. The day I received this large multipage document was also the day the mortgage company's statement of an escrow increase arrived. Seems they require an additional four hundred plus to meet the last tax levy we passed. As they say, "Timing is everything."

The idea of a little bit here and a little bit there adds up. We're told it's only thirty or forty dollars more a month. That's how the tax bill got worked up into the thousands presently required. What's a little more? If you're not working, or are one those living on Social Security, it's more than a couple of cheap meals.

I happen to have been in favor of the levy. I believe the welfare of the nation including the elderly and the unemployed resides in its young. A failure to provide the best education we have to offer is tantamount to shooting ourselves in the foot. Some of tomorrow's leaders are fifth-graders struggling with Social Studies while literally rubbing elbows with their fellow classmates today. Therefore, I urge the School Board to place this issue on the next ballot and encourage everyone to give it the support our nation and its youth deserve.
