Sports Wire: Terminators, Boneyard win fall softball crowns

The Terminators won the parks and recreation fall coed softball championship with a 12-0 record, including four victories in the postseason tournament.

In the playoffs, the team beat Classic Homes, Zeppe's and BW-3s twice, including 20-1 in the title contest.

Members of the team were Holly Richards, Sonny Marchette, John Zelnak, Mike Bailey, Jeff Higgins, Jason Pastva, Lonnie Troyer, Bridgett Jones, Laura Lingro, Randy Richards, Tiffany Lynch, Amanda Penzera, Lisa Rock and Renee Pastva.

Supporting the team as mascot was Zoe Pastva.

The parks/rec department also has reported that the Boneyard won the men's fall softball league title.

The squad finished in third place during the regular season, but won three of four playoff games and finished with a 12-2 overall mark.

Members are: manager Mike Loeffler, Chris Peterson, Dave Carpenter, Kirk Kapusta, Steve Fluharty, Brian Dalton, Mike Jones, Michael Schwartz, Ricky "Black Horse" Ubinall, Todd Boyland, Matt Pinney, Mike Roth, Rick Fluharty, Mike Bailey and Brad Nevine.

Six Greenmen varsity football players have earned honors from the Associated Press in the Northeast Inland District.

Named to the first team defense are senior lineman Mitch Knapp, senior linebacker Eric Schultz and senior back Mike Ganoe.

On the second team offense is senior lineman Ben Jubell, while making honorable mention are quarterback Ty Watson and Anthony Melchiori.

University of Chicago freshman wide receiver Dee Brizzolara of Aurora has been selected as an athlete of the week for football, according to the University Athletic Association.

Brizzolara was the UAA's top offensive performer of the week after the Maroons' 24-7 season-ending victory over Carnegie Mellon. He caught seven passes for 157 yards and TD passes of 28, 42 and 67 yards, and logged a 52-yard kickoff return.

In was the third time this season Brizzolara received the league honor. Chicago ended with a 5-4 record.

For the year, Brizzolara had 50 catches for 1,028 yards and 11 touchdowns. His pass receptions resulted in an average gain of 114 yards a game.

He led the natiion in Divisioin III in all-purpose yards per game at 220 and his 1,028 receiving yards were a season record for Chicago.

Kent State junior guard Rodriquez Sherman was named the first Mid-American Conference East Division player of the week for the men's basketball season.

He averaged 14.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in Kent's three games in the Hispanic College Fund Classic. He missed last season because of a knee injury.

In the recent Solon Stars Fall Breakout swim meet, Aurora resident Adrienne DeAlba placed ninth in the 100-yard individual medley and 50-yard butterfly.

She swims with the Hudson Explorers Aquatic Team. Fifty-one team members placed in the top 10 in various events.

Aurora High School graduate Jessie Blackley recently completd her second season as a middle blocker for the Marietta College volleyball team.

The sophomore finished with 72 kills, 8 digs and 45 total blocks in 47 sets.

Marietta, under head coach Ray Costa, posted an 18-12 record and was tied for sixth place in the Ohio Athletic Conference with a 4-5 mark.

A number of Aurorans participated in a huge field of runners at the Pigskin Classic 5K in downtown Cleveland prior to the Ohio State-Michigan football game.

Results for the women were: Jennifer Lunn, 326th (29:57.54), Jane Springer, 345th (30:31.81), Pam Kennedy, 476th (34:34.42); and Susan Hagwell, 571st (49:39).

Results for the men were: Adam Zelwin, 15th (18:29.13); David Regelbrugge, 140th (22:28.4), Kevin Sasole, 141st (22:28.95), James Boyd, 156th (22:39.09), Terry Salsak, 177th (23:13.94); Jim Pinter, 205th (23:42.56); Clifford Masch, 405th (27:12.63); Bill Kennedy, 463rd (29:16.91); and Don Hagwell, 578th (49:29.95).

The city of Aurora's head groundkeeper and Aurora High School graduate Dennis Altman rolled a high series of 680 recently in the Perrin Asphalt bowling league at Kent Lanes.

Kent State University's men's basketball team upped its record to 3-1 with a 70-61 victory over Youngstown State.

Tyre Evans led the squad with 18 points, while Justin Greene had 17 and Anthony Simpson 12.

The men will play tonight (Nov. 25) at South Florida and Nov. 29 at Morehead State.

Meanwhile, the KSU women (2-1) ost to Marshall 57-50, as Jena Stutzman led all scorers with 19 points and Jamilah Humes added 8.

The women host Rhode Island on Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. and Cleveland State on Dec. 5 at 2 p.m.

Ohio deer-gun season opens Nov. 30 and runs until Dec. 6. Gun hunters also can seek out deer Dec. 19-20.

Ohio's deer population is estimate at 650,000, according to the Ohio Division of Wildlife, and estimates are that 115,000 to 125,000 whitetails will be shot during gun season.

Hunters are encouraged to kill more does, and antlerless deer permits must be purchased by Nov. 29.

Hunting regulations and maps of the state's deer zones are found online at www.wildohio.com or they can be obtained by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE.

Meanwhile, during the first six weeks of the deer-archery season, Ohio hunters killed 53,959 animals, 4 percent more than last year's 51,976. The archery season runs until Feb. 7, 2010.

Portage County bowhunters took 767 deer. The leading county was Licking at 2,334, followed by Homes at 1,969, Tuscarawas at 1,770, Coshocton at 1,451 and Ashtabula at 1,348.

The Chagrin Falls Booster Club will sponsor its second annual turkey Trot Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. at Gurney Elementary School in South Russell.
