HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Local historian Dick Fetzer will be the featured speaker at an Aurora Historical Society dessert meeting April 17 at 7 p.m.

Members are invited to take their favorite dessert to Aurora Library's gallery to hear about Fetzer's successful preservation-restoration of the Zeno Kent house on Aurora-Hudson Road.

LEAGUE OF VOTERS

Members of the League of Women Voters of Northern Portage County are planning a trip to the First Ladies National Historic Site on May 3, with departure from Aurora at 9 a.m.

The group will tour the restored Ida Saxton McKinley House and National First Ladies Library, Education and Research Center in Canton.

Regular admission is $7, but $6 for senior citizens 62 and older. Plans include having lunch after the tours at the Stables Restaurant across the street.

Residents interested in the trip should call Jean Hogan at 330-562-8920 as soon as possible so carpooling can be arranged.

Members Caroline Newell and JoEllen Armstrong have made plans to attend the LWV Ohio Statehouse Day and Council on April 29 in Columbus.

Workshop topics being offered include "Health Care," "Election Administration Reform: The Secretary of State Everest Report," "Election-Voting Reform: Other Proposals/Issues," "Education Funding," "Lake Erie: Current Issues" and "Paid Sick Leave Proposal."

The LWV will have its annual meeting and luncheon June 7 at noon at the Aurora Club. The program will be about mental health issues. Members should call President Doreene McDonald at 330-562-8241 if they want to attend.

DEMOCRATIC WOMEN

Members of the Federated Democratic Women of Portage County will sponsor a spring season fundraiser April 19 at the Elks Club of Kent off Route 59.

Hors d'oeuvres will be served at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will follow at 6. Evening entertainment will be provided by Steve Shanafelt and Dan Smith. No tickets will be sold the night of the event.

BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT

Jim Shukys of Aurora is a proud grandfather of Ethan Callaway Kurtz, who was born March 15 at Robinson Memorial Hospital, weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces.

His parents are Jason Kurtz and Kayla Copenhaver of Kent. He has a sister Natalie Benchendorf, who is 3 years old.

Other grandparents are Malissa Copenhaver of Pittsburgh and Dave and Peggy Kurtz of Kent. Great-grandfathers are Gerald Copenhaver of Solon and Harold Stewart of Kent.

'CABARET' EXCERPTS

Residents of Anna Maria of Aurora recently had cast members of Aurora Community Theatre's "Cabaret" perform excerpts from the production.

Hester Lewellen and Frank Mularo sang "Married." Chanda Porter, Greta Rothman, Mia Coleman, Suzanne Davis, Siri Dennis, Justine Greenwald and Erica Haynes danced.

ACT will present "Cabaret" on Fridays and Saturdays from April 25 to May 17.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The three-Chamber networking luncheon involving the Aurora, Solon and Twinsburg Chambers of Commerce will be April 17 at 11:30 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Twinsburg.

Dr. Michael Roizen, chief wellness officer of the Cleveland Clinic, will speak.

On April 25 at 7:30 a.m., Portage County Chambers of Commerce are hosting a supernetworking breakfast at the Bertram Inn in Aurora. Cost is $10. To register, call 330-626-4769.

SENIOR CELEBRATION

Tickets for the 13th annual Portage County Senior Celebration are on sale at the Streetsboro Senior Center and Portage County Senior Services Center in Ravenna.

The cost is $13 for the general public and $5 per ticket for senior citizens. The event will be May 12 at 10 a.m. at the Northeastern Oho Universities College of Medicine in Rootstown.

It will include a buffet luncheon, exhibits of local services for seniors, door prizes and an induction into Portage County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.

The event recognizes the accomplishments of Portage County residents age 55 and older. For tickets or information, call Sally Kelly at 330-297-3456.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Women in Business' luncheon will take place April 30 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church in Streetsboro. Aurora resident Pat Giambrone, owner of Giambrone Construction Co., will be the featured speaker. Call 330-626-4769 to RSVP.

ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP

The Indian Trails chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals will host its 21st annual Administrative Professionals Day luncheon April 23 at the Bertram Inn and Conference Center in Aurora.

The event starts with registration at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch and guest speaker C.R. Rae, a freelance speaker, humorist and writer. Gift baskets and a gift card and lottery tree will be raffled off. Cost is $30.

IAAP defines administrative professionals as "individuals who are responsible for administrative tasks and coordination of information in support of an office related environment, and who are dedicated to furthering their personal and professional growth in their chosen profession."
