Aurora's Girl Scouts conducted a Hawaiian luau March 14, with Brownie Troop 141 as host. More than 180 girls attended.
The girls learned to do the hula courtesy of Jessica Coleman. A disc jockey was on hand to play various songs from Hannah Montana to the Beach Boys. Many girls attempted the limbo.
Scouts brought items as a service project, which were later donated to the Safer Futures battered women's shelter.
Scout troops in Aurora sold 20,040 boxes of cookies this year. Ten girls sold more than 300 boxes each, with Kaitlyn Ivars of Troop 865 topping the list with 1,000 boxes sold.
Katie Cochran sold 569 boxes and Logan Nikolich sold 501 boxes. They both are members of Troop 141. Kayla Whitcomb and Katie Mauser of Troop 865 sold 500 boxes each.
Taryn Washburn of Troop 713 sold 449 boxes and Megan Burger of Troop 222 sold 407. Other top sellers were Jordan Alexander of Troop 179, 407; Olivia Heysek of Troop 141, 352; and Tara Cassidy of Troop 865, 300.
In celebration of Girl Scout Sunday, several troops were represented at a March 9 Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Aurora United Methodist Church will have a Scout service April 20 at 10:30 a.m.
A volunteer spring getaway April 5 in Akron was attended by Paula Ivars, Cindy Alexander, Stacie Madill and Kathy Cochran. They attended different training sessions to help in leading their respective troops.
During lunch, the girl Scout leadership experience was discussed. This covered changes being implemented by GSUSA for each age level.
On April 12, Girl Scouts in fourth grade and higher participated in a spa day.
Girl Scout items are displayed in the front entrance hallway at Aurora Library through April 19. Any girl between ages 6 and 18 can become a Scout. Call Paula Ivars at 216-402-5821 to sign up.
