Man charged after allegedly struggling with police

Aurora -- A Freedom Township man was charged with felonious assault and obstructing official business after an incident Feb. 9 at Barrington Town Square.

At about 7:30 p.m., officers were called to a reported fight in a parking lot. It was discovered one group of juveniles had tried to pick a fight with another group. Officers said all those who had been in the altercation left before they arrived.

While officers were finishing up at the scene, they said a struggle broke out with the Freedom Township man, and charges were filed. He was taken to the Portage County Jail.

Meanwhile, on Feb. 8 police said a North Bissell Road resident reported explosives were found while he was cleaning out a shed.

The Summit County bomb squad was called to the scene and found a World War II explosive device and a tear gas canister. Both items were removed from the premises and disposed of by the bomb squad.

Thefts, damaged items

Feb. 7 -- Bike not returned. A Geauga Lake area man reported he allowed a friend of his to use a bicycle, which was never returned. No estimated value of the bike was given.

Feb. 7 -- Locker theft. An Aurora woman reported someone took a cell phone and iPod from her son's locker at the high school without his permission. Value of the missing items was $590.

Feb. 8 -- Car damaged. An Aurora woman reported she was traveling on Aurora Lake Road when her vehicle was damaged by a large piece of asphalt patch kicked up from the road. No damage estimate was given.

Feb. 12 -- Insufficient funds. Officers checked out a report of an insufficient funds check being given to a local veterinary clinic. Because no response was received when letters demanding payment were sent, officers contacted the check writer and ordered him to pay the $60.31 owed.

Feb. 12 -- Canopy damaged. Officers checked out a report that a delivery truck damaged a guardhouse canopy in Barrington Estates. No damage estimate was given.

Miscellaneous cases

Feb. 7 -- Argument. An Orchard Avenue man reported he was threatened by two men. Police said investigation revealed one of the parties was the complainant's son. After speaking with his son, the complainant requested no further police action.

Feb. 9 -- Disorderly conduct. Officers gave a man walking in the 600 block of Route 43 a summons for disorderly conduct after they approached him and claimed he had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. He was given a ride home.

Feb. 13 -- Phone turned in. An Aurora man turned a cell phone he found in an Aurora Commons parking lot into the police station.

Traffic-related cases

Feb. 7 -- Citations issued. An Aurora man was cited for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, having expired license plates and not driving in marked lanes in the 100 block of West Garfield Road.

Feb. 8 -- Two-car crash. No citation was issued after police said an Aurora woman pulled out of a gas station at Routes 43 and 82 and struck a Garrettsville man's car. No damage estimate was given.

Feb. 8 -- Hits light pole. Police said an Aurora man veered off the high school access road and struck a light pole. The man told police he lost control when his glasses fell onto the floorboard and he reached down to pick them up. No damage estimate was given.

Feb. 11 -- Collision. Officers said an Aurora man went left of center and struck the front of a Springfield man's vehicle. No citation was issued and no injuries were reported. No damage estimate was given.

Feb. 12 -- Trees struck. An Aurora woman was taken to a Solon emergency center by Aurora paramedics after police said she went off the 100 block of North Aurora Road and struck two trees. No damage estimate was given and no citation was issued.
