Northfield Center -- Trustees of the Northfield Center-Sagamore Hills Fire District have hired Reminderville resident Janice E. Hetzel to be the newly formed district's first clerk.

The district Board of Trustees, comprised of the Northfield Center and Sagamore Hills township boards of trustees, hired Hetzel at a special meeting June 23 from a list of 94 applicants.

Northfield Center Trustee Rich Reville said Hetzel's first duties will be to help the fire department make the administrative shift from being part of Northfield Center to an independent political entity.

Hetzel will help the district establish its own bank accounts, solicit bids for new insurance policies and help with the installation of a separate, computerized accounting system, Reville said.

In her application, Hetzel said she worked 21 years for the Shaker Heights Fire Department as senior administrative assistant to the fire and assistant chiefs.

Her application states she was laid off in September 2009 and is currently employed by the Shaker Heights City School District in a substitute clerical position.

Trustees said Hetzel will work part time effective July 1, and earn $18 per hour.

Reville said Trustees decided to push back the district's effective date from July 1 to Aug. 1 to provide enough time to make the administrative transition.

Presently, the Northfield Center Fire Department serves both townships under a contract that has been continually renewed for decades.

Northfield Center had been responsible for paying firefighters' wages and the department's utility bills, maintenance costs, insurance premiums and other such expenses.

Northfield Center's fiscal officer had been responsible for managing the department's finances through township bank accounts.

Once the fire district is fully established, both townships will send the district monthly checks to pay for the fire district's operations.
