by Advocate Staffers Tuscarawas County recorded 1,164 deer harvested and led all counties as Ohio hunters killed 19,900 deer Dec. 19-20 during an extra weekend of gun hunting, according to the Ohio Division of Wildlife. In 2008, hunters took 16,382 deer during those two days. Harrison County recorded the second highest take (725), followed by Licking (663), Ashtabula (589), Holmes (567), Columbiana (543), Coshocton (503), Knox (488), Stark (487) and Guernsey (474). A total of 198,297 deer have been harvested so far this season when combining the adult and youth gun seasons, early muzzleloader season and first nine weeks of the archery season. Hunters took 252,017 deer overall in 2008-09. The state's muzzleloader season is set for Jan. 9-12, and the archery season continues through Feb. 7. + + + Aurora Parks Coordinator Bill Fellenstein tallied the high series in recent Perrin Asphalt league bowling competition at Kent Lanes. His score was 659. + + + It might be cold outside, but the last area distance run of the year is slated for Dec. 31 at 4 p.m. The 5K event will be at Stow-Munroe Falls High School on Graham Road in Stow. Entry fee is $25. Post-race refreshments will be available for all runners. Age group awards will go to the top three men and women. + + + Kent State University's men's basketball team headed into the Christmas holiday with a two-game winning streak. The Golden Flashes defeated Robert Morris 71-57 and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 85-76 in its most recent pre-Christmas contests. Against Robert Morris, Justin Greene led the way with 21 points, followed by Tyree Evans with 16 and Anthony Simpson with 9. Against A&M, Rodriquez Sherman tallied 16 points, Chris Singletary 14, Mike McKee 13, Evans 11 and Simpson 10. The men are scheduled to play Northeastern tonight (Dec. 30) at Santa Clara, Callif., and then host Norfolk State on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the KSU women beat UNC-Wilmington 84-71. Taisia Jones tallied 25 points, Rachel Bennett and Jamilah Humes each had 13 and Lorriane Ohdiambo added 10. The women will face Hawaii tonight and host Delaware and Ohio University on Jan. 3 and 6, respectively. Comments
