by Brent Hovey Correspondent Aurora -- The up-and-down season for the Aurora girls basketball team continued through the pre-Christmas period. The Greenmen went 1-2 the week before Christmas. The squad hasn't put together a winning streak since earning victories in its first two games. Prior to a Dec. 28 game against Streetsboro, AHS earned a relatively easy win over Cardinal, 42-29. Despite playing with an injury, Heather Schroeder led the way. She dislocated her pinkie finger in two spots the previous game, but managed to score 16 points and pull down 4 rebounds. Schroeder, a junior and three-year starter, has done what was expected of her and more. She has been the team's leader and consistently puts together productive games. And freshman Allison Howard has shown why head coach Erika Schultz was excited about her when the season began. Howard is getting more and more minutes and is taking advantage of it. Against Cardinal, she had 7 points and 5 rebounds, while in a 56-49 loss to Cuyahoga Falls, she tallied 15 points and grabbed 7 boards. "She has an extremely bright future," said Schultz. "WE PLAYED all right, but had a hard time scoring," said Schultz. "We turned the ball over way too many times." Aurora had 24 turnovers, and Schutlz said that's one thing the team must cut down on. Along with Howard's strong game, Schroeder scored 19 points and Camilla Brown, another freshman, had 7 points and 4 offensive rebounds. Back on Dec. 18, Aurora lost a Chagrin Valley Conference game to Perry, 50-34. "Perry is a tough team -- very aggressive and they pressure the ball well," said Schultz. "They also attack the hoop well, which we had a hard time stopping. We again had too many turnovers." Schroeder led the scoring with 7 points, which was matched by freshman Alexa Debord's output. Howard and Brown helped with 4 points each. Schultz is satisfied with the season so far, and there is potential to have a great run as 2010 starts if the team can find a consistent level of play. "We just need to take care of the basketball," she said. "It's hard to score when you turn the ball over so many times. The girls are improving; we just need to keep working on things." AHS returns to action Jan. 6 at NDCL and will host Orange in CVC action Jan. 8. Comments
