Aurora -- The old basketball cliché of one team shooting the lights out literally came into play Dec. 28.

The Greenmen girls basketball team was in the midst of an 11-0 run, turning a competitive contest against Streetsboro into rout late in the third quarter.

Then several banks of lights went dark in the Greenmen's gymnasium.

After about a 45-minute delay, AHS Athletic Director Paul Powers suspended the game. He said a blown transformer outside apparently caused the outage.

The game will resume on a date to be determined with Aurora leading 46-24.

The outage was about the only thing that went wrong for AHS all night. Coach Erika Schultz said her squad enjoyed one of its best shooting nights of the season.

"We [usually] do not shoot the ball anywhere near as well as we did tonight," Schultz said. "Heather [Schroeder] and Alexa [Debord] shot the ball well."

Streetsboro didn't have a poor shooting night, but was in early foul trouble and had a miserable time trying to break AHS's 1-3-1 defense.

Both teams hit two field goals in the first quarter, but Aurora had a 7-0 advantage in made free throws.

That gave the Greenmen an 11-4 lead after one quarter, and Aurora was never in danger thereafter.

Schultz said Aurora's 1-3-1 defensive set is a new wrinkle for the team this year. From the set, Aurora launched into a match-up zone, a half-court trap set and a man defense -- all of which led to numerous Rocket turnovers.

"It helps us get easy buckets," Schultz said of the defense. "We wanted to make sure we pressured the ball tonight and we did."

Schroeder was the key beneficiary of the defense. She had 11 of her game-high 17 points in the second quarter. Debord put in 15 points.

Forward Jennifer Langford was Streetsboro's leading scorer with 6 points.

Streetsboro was still down only 8 points in the waning moments of the first half. But Schroeder nailed a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Greenmen a 29-18 halftime lead.

The Rockets played AHS even early in the third quarter, but AHS's trap set started yielding more turnovers.
