Aurora -- About $249,000 in add-on costs for school district construction projects were approved Nov. 23 by the Board of Education.

According to Treasurer Bill Volosin, all of the building project add-ons are being paid for out of a contingency fund. The overall cost of construction is about $19 million, which is financed by a 2008 bond issue approved by voters.

"The contingency fund is about $1.2 million, and we've used about $1 million of it so far," he noted. "Many of the extra costs were because of ground excavation problems."

The biggest single cost -- $128,493 -- was OK'd for Henle Builders for remediation work in the east parking lot at Harmon School.

About $35,000 will go to PK Mechanical Inc. for additional piping, ductwork and insulation at Miller School.

About $34,000 will go to Stitle Construction and Absolute Fire Protection for drywall, a storm line and sprinkler system at Aurora High School.

About $32,000 will be paid to R.B. Thomas Electric and Stitle Construction for conduits, cables, breakers and frost slabs at Harmon School.

In other matters, the Board accepted the final state audit report for the period from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008.

Volosin reported there were no findings for recovery against the district, and the state rendered an "unqualified opinion," which means all accounting practices were in compliance.

Members also awarded three-year administrative contracts to Transportation Supervisor Sal Arquilla (salary is currently $71,853), Academic Director Dr. Alicia Lopez ($113,767) and AHS Assistant Principal Michael Roberto ($78,000).

IN OTHER personnel matters, the School Board:

* Extended leaves of absence for speech-lanaguage pathologist Julie Iafigliola and Leighton reading teacher Angela Sams for the second semester and bus driver Natalie Ratleff from Nov. 2 to Dec. 31, and approved a leave of absence for bus driver Charles Merrill from Dec. 8 to Feb. 15, 2010.

* Employed the following as support staff substitutes: Richard Habbyshaw, David Horn, George Mohr, Monica Mudrey and Connie Yung.

* OK'd Michael Cardis, Shannon Kearns and Heather Meely as substitute teachers.

* Accepted the resignation of bus driver Jennifer Reaggle effective Nov. 1 after two years of service to the district.

* Awarded supplemental contracts to diagnostician Debbie Buss, weight room supervisor Tim Deering and mentor teacher Rose Brown.

The School Board also:

* Approved the 2010-11 academic year calendar.

* Congratulated the following Rotary Club of Aurora students of the month: Puneet Sharma and Amanda Ashworth from the high school and Alex Avalon and Grace Aldredge from Harmon. Also congratulated guidance counselor Tami Mazzella for her selection as Ohio guidance counselor of the year.

* Approved a purchase order worth $29,539 for Henle Builders Inc.

* Acknowledged a gift of $100 from Debby Oulton for Destination ImagiNation.

* Was given for perusal policy revisions dealing with programs for handicapped/disabled students, reporting child abuse, student absences and excuses, student fees, fines and charges and credit flexibility.
