Sports Wire: Green JVs compile 10-0 mark; trio of swimmers compete

Aurora's Green junior varsity team had an outstanding year, winning its division in the Western Reserve Youth Football League at 10-0.

It was the only Aurora team ever to go undefeated in the league, according to coach Sean Devins.

The squad outscored its foes 199-45, and beat Solon 14-0 in the title game. Other teams in the league are Chagrin Falls, Chardon, Chesterland, Hudson, Kenston and Woodridge.

Twenty-three teams compete in varsity/JV divisions.

Players are Jack Arnold, James Auswtin, Gavin Blunt, Mason Copley, Justin DeMassimo, Dino DeRoia, Cooper Devins, Michael Dudziak, Evan Fromwiller, Zach Gerber, Ben Gramm, Cade Huffman, Grant Huffman, Zach Sender, Seth Stojetz, Alex Taylor and Ethan Walker.

Other coaches are Jeff Romwiller, Donny Blunt, Jeff Gerber and Craig Huffman.

Cheerleaders are Elizabeth Barto, Rachel Dudziak, Reilly Grist, Morgan Copley, Lizzy Olesky, Taylor Turick, Riley Blunt, Ally Devins, Elizabeth Keller, Ashlyn White, Mar-risa White, Marrisa Stojanovic and Remy Stock.

Aurorans Josh Friedler, Adrienne DeAlba and Lauren Sapochetti, members of the Hudson Explorers aquatic team, participated in the SwimStrong Splash Out Cancer meet.

Eighty-four swimmers on the team competed in 98 events, with 59 top 10 finishes. "We had some amazing time drops," said age group coach Stephanie Ross.

Sapochetti, 9, managed three top 10 finishes -- first in 10-under 100-yard breaststroke, fifth in the 50 freestyle and ninth in the 50 backstroke. All were personal best times.

With five additional top 15 places, Sapochetti was the third-place high scorer for HEAT.

Friedler, 11, had five personal bests -- 14th in the 200 breaststroke, 17th in 50 breaststroke, 20th in 200 individual medley, 23rd in 100 freestyle and 27th in 50 butterfly.

DeAlba, 12, swam her first 200 individual medley in a time of 3:16.31.

HEAT is a year-round competitive USA swimming program for persons age 5 and older. Swimmers come from Aurora, Streetsboro, Twinsburg, Hudson, Kent, Stow and Tallmadge.

The annual Pigskin Classic 5K will step off Nov. 21 at 10 a.m. from the Blind Pig, 1228 W. 6th St., Cleveland. Tailgating starts at 9.

The 28th annual Fleet Feet Sports Turkey rot will be Nov. 26, with a 1-mile run at 8:45 a.m. and a 5-miler at 9:30 a.m. at the Galleria in Cleveland.

Aurora's Turkey Trot is Nov. 26 at 8:30 a.m. at Aurora Farms Premium Outlets. It is a 4-mile run and cost to enter is $20. Participants should take a nonperishable food item. For details, call 330-562-4333.

Aurora resident and city parks coordinator Bill Fellenstein busted the high game and series -- 279 and 751 -- during a recent session of the Perrin Asphalt bowling league at Kent Lanes in Kent.

Aurora High School graduate John Trew is starting his second season with the Ohio Dominican University men's basketball team. He is listed on the roster as a 6-foot-8 guard.

The team got off to an 0-2 start with losses to McKendress University and Georgetown College. In the first game, Trew tallied 5 points and pulled down 2 rebounds. In the second, he had 2 points and 2 rebounds.

Locals have a chance to see OD play when it invades Lake Erie College in Painesville on Jan. 30, 2010.

Kent State University's men's basketball team has gotten off to an 2-1 start this season after three games over the weekend.

The Golden Flashes beat Samford 69-66 and University of Alabama-Birmingham 72-65, but lost to Wisconsin-Green Bay 87-86.

Against Samford, Chris Singletary led the pack with 19 points and Justin Greene and Tyree Evans each added 11.

Against UAB, Mike McKee had 19 points, Rodriquez Sherman 17 and Evans 10. Against Green Bay, Greene had 20 points, Evans 19, Sherman 18 and Singletary 12.

Meanwhile, KSU women beat Robert Morris 62-57 in their opener. Ellie Shields had 14 points and Stephanie Gibson added 12.

The men play tonight (Nov. 18) at Youngstown State, host Rochester (Mich.) Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. and travel to South Florida on Nov. 25.

The women play tonight at Youngstown State, Nov. 21 at Marshall and Nov. 24 at Florida Atlantic.
