by Holly Schoenstein Reporter Aurora -- The city has moved one step closer to securing $830,000 in state Issue II funds for the cleaning and relining of four water mains. Mayor Lynn McGill said the city submitted a complete grant application to the state's Public Works Commission after the acceptance of its grant proposal in June, according to his report to City Council on Nov. 16. He said there have been 148 applications for the funding and calls the city's chances of being awarded the money "very favorable." "The cast iron pipe has good integrity, but on many occasions brown water is delivered because of the composition of the pipe. A cement liner will solve this problem," McGill wrote in his report. The project, which would start in the third quarter 2010, includes the following water mains: 6- and 8-inch, 5,622-foot pipe on Eldridge Road; 12-inch pipe on Aurora-Hudson Road that extends 1,100 feet along Bissell to Walden; 12-inch Nautilus Trail pipe that extends more than 2,300 feet; and 8-inch, 300-foot pipe at California Street near the intersection of East Boulevard. The water main on Aurora-Hudson Road, which was installed in 1928, has deteriorated and occasionally delivers brown water to the Walden neighborhood, McGill wrote in the report. The city's share of the cost would be $800,000, and the project would take about six months to complete, the mayor added. E-mail: hschoenstein@recordpub.com Phone: 330-688-0088 ext. 3152 Comments
